Assists haven’t been a problem for Flyers center/winger Trevor Zegras. Goals were. That is, until his breakout game on Saturday afternoon.

Zegras is also a +5. The myth that he’s not good defensively is hopefully dying.

    Zegras metrics

It’s not a myth and never was a myth. Has he improved? Probably, but he’s also not playing center, which has increased responsibilities, this year.

The only players on the team with a negative plus/minus are the 4th line and Drysdale. Hell Dvorak who was a career -60 coming into the season is +5. They are receiving some exceptional even strength goaltending by Vlader and it’s making everyone look good. Props to Vlader, a career sub .900 keeper, for starting off hot with .932.

Anyway, he is off to a good start and hopefully the Flyers can flip him for a center.

dont care that much if zegras is bad defensively as long as he is making up for it offensively. have always said that.

now it is short-term thinking that has him playing on the wing. after 2 fn games he was switched. mind boggling. he should be at center all year to see what he has to offer. also do not like dvorak with him and MM. he doesn’t offer much to me.

Never been a fan of this kid, but he’s playing well so far for the team.

Zegras isn’t taking faceoffs because that is the weakest part of his game and Dvorak is really good at them. First forward back into the D-zone takes on the +1 role in the Box +1. Sometimes it’s Zegras and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes there’s switching if a Dman jumps in deep in the Ozone and a forward has to turn around and cover for him. If that’s Dvorak, that doesn’t make him a defenseman. The NHL isn’t rod hockey.

You didn’t address that analytics show that , yes, Zegras historically has been bad defensively at even strength. Nobody was confused about Dvorak not being a defensemen. Just like nobody is confused about Zegras, who is listed as a winger in the lineup, not being a center on this team.

Historically? Only someone who’s still pathologically obsessed with Torts would care about “historically.” How is he playing THIS year?
