ParticipantThe only way Laughton makes any sense is the overpayment was due to him being bought to finish last year, those playoffs, and this year and what was expected to be playoffs as well. Philly also held half his contract. So it makes the price of selling him for nothing more than a third, being a half priced guy, even worse, unless he’s just a rental that they’re planning to resign in the off-season. Not my idea, I’m just wondering if they’re thinking this.
I will add that according to Tree there was little to no retention needed in the league this year. Too many sellers as well. This is a deadline that saw both Kadri and Schenn move with 3 and 2 years left on their deals. Flames retained 20% and Blues retained 0 from what I can see. So laughton being cheap wasn’t as valuable as I originally thought.
They got Laughton last year and were division champs. Why would you not make a deal in that season? It’s only a 1st and they expected two playoff runs with him. Sadly the second didn’t come to fruition.
If we look and say a 1st, 3rd (condition to 2nd), 5th for Laughton and Roy I think everyone would be relatively happy. I’d like to hope the kings make the playoffs, give up the 2nd and the leafs resign Laughton.
Overall I give the deadline a C+. I still think they should have moved Jarnkrok, Benoit, possibly Maccelli as he is RFA and due for a raise above 3.4 million. Maybe stetcher or Carlo and even possibly OEL.
I do think the Carlo trade was a bit of an overpay but again, the leafs got the coveted RHD, under contract for last playoffs and this year AND next. Pricey to pay with only top 5 protected. Hindsight is 20/20 though. If they beat the Panthers last year, are we talking the same thing?
I heard rumblings of Stolarz being moved and I suspect a goalie will be gone in the summer. Hildebeast is no longer waiver exempt next year so they likely have to move off one of the guys.

ParticipantKadri to the Avs, holy fuck, they’re FOR SURE my team now.
Wow.
Happy for Kadri – wonder what it cost the Av’s?
I don’t know the prospects but they gave up a first conditional on the leafs first for Roy. So center depth is McKinnon, Nelson, Kadri and Roy. Pretty solid.

ParticipantWhy do I have to scroll through 1500 posts? Is there a “goto the end” button I am missing?
Good to see the usual still around having the same conversations.
I only came to see how everyone is faring.
I havent watched many games since they suck but for what it is worth, I think it should be a retool type of year. Roy for a 1st is nice. Hopefully get back some ready to play guys like a Minten lol. Sucks that happened! Shanny trying to save his job and helps overpay lol.
I dont think these issue are purely on Marner leaving. Lots of issues in total. Lots of goalie injuries, no Tanev, bit of Matthews injury.
Bad year. I dont think this is the total decline. I think this is a good wake up call for the core guys. They spread the cap out on the big 4, didnt work. Regular season matters cause if you dont do well, no playoffs. I rather the past 9 years than the previous 9 before it.
Matthews is too good to give up on. Washington, Colorado, even Pitts didnt give up on their generational talent and they eventually won. Pitts might even make the playoffs TWO years after people thought Sid and Co were all washed up when Dubas took over.
Ah well. Tomorrow will be fun in a different way.
Aaron
ParticipantSo the Leafs have 5.8 in cap space.
but if you punt Kampf and remove Reaves, that bumps up to 9.5 or soWeird spot for the Leafs to be, having lots of cap space
Yeah they have a bit of space but they also need to sign Robertson, he should be cheap though. Kampf, Reavo, Jarnkrok could be moved.
Aaron
Participant8×6.1m for Ekblad just laughable
Is it? The guy just had 20 game suspension for drugs. Think this guy with a history of some injuries isn’t going to hold up. Not like he’s worth 10 million imo.
Aaron
ParticipantJarnkrok becomes 775k on a 1 yr deal around noon tomorrow (Cap hit stays at 2.1) so he should be easy to move. Kampf less so but he’ll be ~ 1.7M over two years in cash so there’s hope.
Leafs look like this to me so far …
XXX-Math-Nyl
Kni-Tava-XXX
Dom-Roy-McM
XXX-Lau-XXXIf they find homes for Kampf and Jarnkrok then they’ll have about $16.2M to fill things out (and that includes the overage salaries for Patches, Reaves and Benning).
Maybe they can move the rights to Robertson and Holmberg for stuff too.
Probably enough to add Marchand, a middle six RW, and a pair of torpedo’s to play on the fourth line. I like Jeannot on the 4th if he’s willing to be $2M or less and short term.
I dont see any issues in moving these low end guys. They are certainly NHL players with a bit of cost certainty. The cap is going up so Kampf’s deal won’t hinder a team taking him on. So hopefully some basic moves in the coming weeks.
Aaron
ParticipantForget marchand. What a waste of money he would be on the leafs.
Hes effective as a 3rd liner on a mi e with other good third liners. On the leafs, he’d play second line against tougher comp and wouldnt be as effective.
Use the $8-9m on something else.[/quote]Agreed. Marchand can go cash in somewhere else.
He took a discount to stay with the bruins and now that he has this cup, why should he take another discount somewhere else? I’m sure someone will pay him $8 million but not the leafs (I hope). I do think if he wants to stay in Florida he takes a discount though.
Aaron
ParticipantAssuming Knies comes back at about ~ 7M the Leafs would have about 20.5M to spend with defence and g’tending filled out and …
Domi-Matthews-Nylander
Knies-JT-McMann
XXX-Laughton-XXXI don’t hate that top 6 to start. If Marner is walking and Marchand is too long/expensive then save your bullets for the trade deadline to add to the top 6. Spend a bunch on some really good 3rd liners. Maybe improve the D. Weaponize that cap space.
They have Reaves, Jarnkrok, Kampf to help fill that out already. Holmberg is RFA and so is Robertson. They pretty much have a roster IF they wanted to. I hope and believe they will make some changes but they have a lot of guys to take spots for the moment.
Personally, I can see Kampf,Jarnkrok moved. Maybe Reaves? Open up space for bringing back the likes of Patches and space for Cowan.

ParticipantYawn……this draft blows. Next year…..Atlanta! Or not.
I always feel the draft is overrated. Usually a big trade on the weekend like the Dobson one but the actual draft is quite mid.
Aaron
ParticipantKinda makes sense for the Isle to trade Dobson. Not only is he just shy of 10 million a year, they likely aren’t really in contention during the first few years AND they drafted Schafer.
Also, a run on centers at the draft in the first round. 8 picks and 6 are centers.
Aaron
ParticipantAre you happy, sad or indifferent on this signing?
Everyone should be happy. He was arguably the “biggest” free agent center this off season and he signed for less than Nelson or Duchene.
Aaron
ParticipantNot expecting much from the Leafs this weekend. Sure, they might do something with the bottom 6, but nothing spectacular. Hopefully, they can get a team to bite on Marner’s rights, so we actually get a return on this wanker. JT’s signing is OK, although I was hoping that they could have acquired a good defensive Centre, with a 20 goal pedigree that could have pushed JT to the 3rd Centre position. Maybe it’s too soon to tell, but there is a hole that needs filling at the 3C position. I imagine when Marner walks, they’ll look at someone like Ehlers to play in the top 6. I was hoping for Boezer but the price may be too high.
I didn’t see any UFA 2nd line centers so I’ll take JT. The good news maybe it’s a trade for like Robertson,Minten or something and JT can slide to the wing/3rd. I like his new salary for when he does begin to slide. It won’t be an anchor.
JT still put up 38 goals last year. Not saying he does the same but he was definitely a 2nd line center in the NHL.
Aaron
ParticipantGreat move from JT but don’t expect the same from Knies. Tavares has earned over $111M n his career and this is his last contract. Knies has earned less than $2M and this contract will set the basis for future deals.
So he has to take 9 million and no in between? I would hope Knies takes something like 6mil x 4 years
Aaron
ParticipantThis upcoming year will the last year of LTIR abuse.
It’s going to be horrifying to watch teams abuse it one last time.
Unless the Leafs do it.
I had heard briefly by Pierre Lebrun that some clauses would go into effect for the upcoming season. I’m surprised if the LTIR one isn’t one of them.
Aaron
ParticipantIf the Leafs had traded 2 x top 20 1st round pics & that player for Dobson with the extension you just know many Leaf fans and for sure non-leaf fans would be screaming it was an overpayment! I actually think this one is a bit of a wash right now and both teams feel like they won.
cough**the Kessel trade**cough….
that what that trade makes me think of somewhat.
I feel like it COULD be similar to Phaneuf. In that he had a really high ceiling in his first few years then tapered off to just a “good” D-man. I hope it doesn’t but that’s kind of where my mind went on this trade. Wouldn’t be the first time a young d-man got traded and kind of slid in his career.
BJ’s getting a couple centers the last couple days. Just depth.
JT signing is DNA change. He could have got 7 million on the open market but he wants to win in his hometown. He took a real discount. Show Knies if he wants to be here then to take what’s offered and win.
I keep hearing via media how “depth” is the reason Florida won the cup but it seems glossed over that the reason they had depth was because they had 9 million on LTIR before the playoffs so they could acquire the depth. Where are the panthers without Jones/Marchand? Leafs are way closer than we think as fans if this is the benchmark.
Yeah I get Florida, TB and Vegas all abused this rule in the CBA and anyone can use it, okay that’s fine but it’s being closed because why have all these “winners” win only because they cheated? -
