I think it’s as simple as it gets; Shanahan wanted complete control and having Lou in the organization was a threat. If things went poorly, ownership would eventually remove Shanahan and promote Lou. Instead, Shanahan wanted a puppet GM and ownership, as ignorant as they ever have been about hockey, allowed it. Dubas was his pet. Treliving was hired to be the same until Shanahan got fired. And as we can see, Treliving is a glorified assistant GM who is running this team even further into the ground than Shanahan did. -Fakesies

The Leafs organization envisioned a league that was changing. They expected an evolution towards speed and skill, where a potent powerplay would keep rough/rugged play in check. Management in the new NHL would lean heavily on analytics as the new direction would remove a lot of the intangibles that traditionally were important for success, particularly in the playoffs. Dubas fit the vision. Lou did not.

What they got was a league that did not change in the slightest and a team with not nearly enough of the heart/grit/caresi required to win. Then they got F’d over by the stagnant cap which meant that their overpaid players didn’t become good deals as they aged. They were messed up by this worse than any other team.

They then proceeded to go down a dark hole of throwing away draft picks and prospects every year to pick up “grit” guys to hopefully bring that element to the team. They decimated their farm and their draft capital. The problem is when your top earners and “best” players are the ones who don’t have enough heart, then players brought in at the end of the season will change absolutely nothing.

Now, they simply have the “wrong” best players. They aren’t good enough. In fact, they are getting worse. Nylander is about the same as Kessel; good piece, not a leader. Matthews game gets worse every year. He is an average 2nd line center now paid like a top-5 player in the league. Rielly should have been gone before his last contract. Tanev is way past his prime and Tavares, as steady as he is, is just not enough to lead this team to any success. The rest of the players are just interchangeable, average NHLers.

I would seriously consider blowing it all up. I do not think this iteration of the team will ever win anything.

You have to admit, it is pretty funny to watch them fail so completely. 🙂

They should be embarrassed, but if there is one thing we know about this team it is that they are not capable of feeling embarrassment.

Great that they have won a couple recently, but this team gets outworked nearly every night, and they have for the past 10 years or so.

It’s a bunch of things, including what you wrote above about price and time.

I look at these ticket prices on the resale market, and I can get much better seats for much less money.

One of the big things about season seats is guaranteed access to playoff tickets, but the prices are so bloody high now, it’s hard to justify going to a game. I’d honestly prefer to go to a bar with friends.

And I’m certainly not as passionate as I used to be. Many will say that it’s because the Leafs have disappointed me for so long, but I honestly think it’s just me getting older. – Wedgie

Interesting what you said about the re-sale market and time. If you aren’t into seeing every game, or even most games, anymore, it certainly seems that the resale market might work better. From what I remember you are in the city or in close proximity, so you can probably do the last minute thing. (Tougher for me from Guelph).

As far as age, that is a thing. My dad used to tell me about it and I never really understood. I think that as you get older, you don’t get the same adrenaline rush and excitement. You also realize that none of it really matters in your life, even in the slightest. It all gets a little old.

You nailed it with the bar comment. Watching a game in a bar with friends or at a friends place is still fun, but it’s more about the company.

Another good night to buy Leafs tix.

    Looking right now – Sec 115, Row 14 Golds – $162.68 a ticket.

    The market is dead.

Will be very interesting to see what happens at renewal time.

I’ve been a season ticket holder for almost 30 years, and prior to this year, never considered giving them up.

As of today, I do not think I will renew.

Surprised to hear this Wedgsies. Is it because you feel the team is not, or on the verge of being not, competitive? Is it that you find the lack of effort or heart to be frustrating? Is it the price? (vs. what you could do on the re-sale market)? Or do you just find that you don’t have time or don’t care that much anymore.

I have definitely found that I don’t care as much.

Guess where they’ll be when the league is in the playoffs? Golfing.

But I’m sure you’re happy with mediocrity, explains why you’re a cuck.

I’m guessing this is as accurate as the jays losing to Seattle 👍

They only won any games because they scored 13 runs.

In related news, Tourette syndrome can be very amusing on a hockey message board.

Nothing really broke their way today.
The lodged ball call is absurd.
