ParticipantUG could quite literally be the leafs GM himself and he’d criticize all his moves online lol
truth
Aetherial
ParticipantYes, so far he is almost in the same category, but I still have some hopes for him,
because of injures.
He is the Leafs first line center, without him this team
has no chance to compete. This is just rationalizing giving Matthews a free pass. The injury narrative is constant and tired. Whenever he doesn’t produce, he is magically “injured”, so he is excused.
The truth about Matthews is that he *should* be a top-3 player in this league. He has the talent. We have all seen it. The reality is that nobody on the Leafs has underperformed their talent, or their salary, in the playoffs more than he has.

ParticipantOh, believe me, I want Rielly gone as well. Tavares doesn’t impress me much either. Both are soft and both don’t show up when it counts. The only one that I disagree with is Matthews. The guy has multiple Rocket Richard trophies, plays a 200 foot game, plus wins faceoffs. If he indeed played hurt all year, he did well to get the goals that he got. I noticed that there was no zip on his shots, this year, but with proper rest and therapy, he’ll probably hit 50 next year, regardless who he’s playing with. I’d like to see Brock Boeser on his wing and see where that goes. The rest can pack up and take their dog and pony show to the great unknown of Utah or Minnesota.-Prince
Sorry, zero faith in Matthews.
He has been as bad, or worse, than Marner in the playoffs. How he gets a free pass, year after year is ridiculous.Aetherial
ParticipantOK, let’s discuss this. Has Marner ever scored 40 goals? Has Marner won any hardware in the NHL, like Matthews? So why is Marner wanting Matthews money and millions more than Nylander? I know the Cap is going up, but we heard this before, then Covid hit? Did Marner take a hometown discount back then? No. He squeezed every dollar out of the Leafs and he’s doing it again. On the primary assist in Game 6, vs Florida, that little shovel pass wasn’t a spectacular play. He was trying to not get hit and just chipped it straight towards Matthews. That goal was a soft goal and shouldn’t have went in. On Willy, I’m not impressed with him either. The difference is, he’s under contract and Marner is not. If I had my druthers, I’d move both of these soft primadonna’s. At least you could shore up with cap money in free agency, plus gain some futures as well. -Prince
You are more tolerant than me.
I wanted them all (rielly matthews marner nylander tavares) out, get some picks and started the F over. I don’t think you can afford to have any of them making 8 figures and ice a winning team.Aetherial
ParticipantI just asked in the remainder of the unblocked blogs if they were going to be blocked.
The ghost of a controller over there is a lame ass joke. At least be out in the open. – Dozzer
It’s just weird. Is it someone with a grudge? How come that nonsense hasn’t been stopped. The whole thing is kind of comical.

ParticipantI just got banned for asking if the banning was continuing and pointing out that it got pretty stupid before the playoffs started…
I guess I hurt someone’s feelings.
Aetherial
Participant11 different Florida players on the boxscore, Anderten in Leafs form with 5 goals on 20 shots…

ParticipantMarner is walking. The Leafs no longer have any say in the matter.
The mistakes with the management of this core have been ongoing for nine years.
Marner walking July 1 is not the “mistake” – it’s the cherry on top of an ongoing decade long organizational failure. -Fifty
Best post I have read in a while.

ParticipantI figure Shanahan is gone, Treliving and Berube are safe.
Marner is gone. He has no supporters left here. The crowd booed him any time he touched the puck at the end of the game. Trade him at the draft for whatever paltry picks you can fetch from an interested team, or participate in a sign & trade for him to get his 8th year. Let him go somewhere else and vanish when the going gets tough.
Tavares played well enough to return, but not well enough to warrant even $7m on his next deal. Even losing Marner and JT makes you wonder if the addition of toughness would really alter this group very much.
Rielly had moments when the physicality wasn’t that amped up, but once Florida started to forecheck, he wilted and reverted to missing pucks, losing battles and not physically engaging on the boards where it was required. In the end he contributed little and cost more. I’d try and move him. Buying him out would be just too long (10 years).
I wouldn’t trade Matthews at his lowest value and I’m expecting he was playing hurt all season; while he was almost a P/G in the playoffs he was not himself and was too infrequently not an asset.
I don’t know what happened to Willy either. He just vanished and didn’t engage way too often. It was enigma-Willy – playing when he felt like it.
On the plus side there were bright spots other than the D and G – Obviously Knies, but the lesser sung guys like Lorentz, Laughton, Pacioretty and at times Holmberg were all pretty good. Kampf, Jarnkrok and Robertson might be done as Leafs.
An honest assessment? They made it further than they have under Matthews – not far enough obviously – but there’s progress there. They need toughness in the forwards and from the forwards. Still too many guys who are easily pushed around and cowed. It’s disappointing and their ability to not compete at critical times was probably more obvious this year than any other year. And this under a coach who preaches competitiveness more than the last one. I would imagine they need to figure out where that rot is and weed it out.-Monkeypunk
This pretty much sums it up.
Friedman kept saying that Berube would have a big sau in what happens in the off-season. I certainly hope so. He knows better than any of us what is actually wrong with this group and I doubt it is as simple as just let Marner walk for the privilege of overpaying for some new magic beans in FA.

ParticipantI slept normal.
Fortunately i was not invested in this team this year. Didnt even watch game 5 or 7, watched a bit of game 6.With Matthews as captain, marner as an A, i simply dont expect much from this team.
They’ve traded away 1st rounders like crazy, one for a 3rd line center.
Team is screwed for a while. Imo -FakeI slept great!
I haven’t felt this core would ever win for many years now.
Yup, it’s going to be a while. A rebuild can’t even start for another 5 years or so. The team has zero chance as long as Matthews is there.Aetherial
ParticipantKypreos was right.
The better team won. There is zero question that Florida is the better team.
Aetherial
ParticipantWhy do people say to get rid of Matthews? I bet you’d take McKinnon on your team though right? The guy has gotten out of the second round ONCE in his career and that was when he won a cup.
He also made the playoffs once in his first 4 years. Has been to the second round more than Matthews though. Regardless the point is, you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Keep the top centerman. -Aaron
Have you ever watched Mackinnon play compared to how Matthews plays? Matthews is every bit as lazy, frightened and useless as Marner. When the going gets tough, not one of them (MMTNR) rises to the occasion.
