They have the wrong players for physical and to play D. They lost one of their best defensive forward and cant rely on others to make it up. Mainly because āothersā choose not to do it. Its laziness.
1. The game isnt changingā¦.Dubas tried to and failed miserably.
2. I dont think we have the right GM to change the players for the better. The trades heās made so far havent been good.
3. I think the only thing we can do as leafs fans, is hope the MLB FA market kicks into gear in the next week or two, and hope the spring season starts real soon so we can forget about this team for a year or two.

And I get what youāre saying about Marner but there is still two things about him that didnāt fit with what the Tre/Berube wanted to do:
A: great defensively yes but not Berubeās physical style of D so no, he wouldnāt fit (a coaching error imo, just saying)
B: he wouldnāt fit this have cost $15 million to stay in Ontario to get his $7.5 mill take home. Why? Because he isnāt the only one making this choice, his wife, his dad, and other members of his family have a say in this as well, not just the hockey player. So anyone believing heās offer a discount is a dreamer (sorry had to say that since there are a few here, not you, who want to believe that only Mitch makes the call here)Personally I only think that unless thereās something as dramatic as a coaching change to change the approach and get this team to get better this season wonāt likely turn out that well, if a goalie catches absolute fire it might turn out different but the team just looksā¦ lost.

The big guys they brought in, just arent effective at what they were brought in for. The guys they traded for, cant do what they were traded for. Tre really messed up.This was always going to be a transition year, they werent going to replace marner and build the team they want in one offseason. Which is why it was ridiculous to trade away our first for 2026. No one in the entire league was offering a 1st and top end prospect for Carlo at that time.
Look at what most top end teams do (the bruins did it last year), have a down year in the middle of going for it years, get some picks and higher end 1st rounder ā replenish the cupboardā¦.then get back on the playoff horse.

Berube needs to alter and do a hybrid style.Not all teams need to score shit tons of goals. The Panthers were only 15th in the league last year for instance. Some teams are built around D and some around offence, the leafs went for physical play and D this year and itās not working.
So either change
1: the game
2: the players who arenāt buying in
3: the coach
4: the gm who would likely change the coach as wellSitting still with no good picks in their hands would be a truly wasted year.

The guy wanted a $7.5 mill take home after taxes and in an Ontario that would cost around a $15 mill salary for a Canadian player. Ta-fucking-da.
If the leafs want to succeed under Berubeās itās simple, grinding physical play that isnāt based on scoring is needed, not fancy offensive pretty play. So unless the whole team buys into it this wonāt work. The end.
Well, thatās CLEARLY not working, so itās probably Berube who is going to have to pivot, lol.
Some guys are buying it and some arenāt. This is why the team seems so bloody lost. Ffs coach find a game theyāll all be willing to at least try and play.

Just a gut instinct to be honest. After they got eliminated last year, 16/34 and a couple guys were golfing together two days later. El Capitan said after 16 left that they would be friends forever or something along those lines. Matthews hasnāt seemed to be playing with the same passion so far, either.
The whole thing gives me Lowry/DeRozan vibes, minus the part about winning a championship.
This and heās a goal scorer who is now playing for a coach who wants this team playing a style that aims at 2-1 or 3-2 type wins. Canāt see him liking that too much.

The team needs some sort of stir up, Berube wants low scoring hockey and the leafs canāt pull it off the way theyāre built.
