So I was toying around with some math and it made me wonder if the Carlsson offer is as bad as it looks. Maybe we still look at things a bit too negatively thinking of the Covid cap lockdown and don’t really consider how it rises by about 9% a year nowadays.

This year it jumped by 9% and went from $95.5 mill to $104

Next year they’re figuring on 9% again and a jump to $113

Look at it if this continues at 9% a year

2026-27: $104
2027-28: $113
2028-29: $123
2029-30: $134
2030-31: $146

By the end of his contract he’ll only be 12.3% of the cap hit, hell, by the middle of it he’ll only be 14.6%.

The upcoming cap jumps are going to be notably larger meaning the upcoming contracts to stars might seem huge, but they won’t really be too bad, not when businesses own the teams.

A: it’s the next contract and likely the last notable one of his career and B: he won’t get everything as a bonus on July 1 under Arizona taxation and only play for league minimum during the season this time around. By that dumbass logic, the Leafs should still have Nylander on the 3rd line because he hasn’t learned how to play in all three zones yet either.

Keeping Matthews at maximum value is the only path forward for the Leafs. Either he wants to leave when he becomes a UFA or he is the #1 weapon in winning. You have no option unless you blow up the team today and rebuild now which this retard GM elected not to do. If he has to blow it up later, at least Matthews will be at the highest possible value.

McKenna will never be bigger or stronger. He’s small and he’s weak. That’s what he is. He’s another Nylander. The all around option was Stenberg and the Leafs pissed that away.

Nylander is 200lbs, he’s not that small. Not defensive, agreed, but not tiny, that’s Marner who is only 180 but is defensive lol

But we all know that the only hope the Leafs have of keeping Matthews is giving him a playmaker on his wing and that’s exactly why they prayed as they drafted McKenna. This is their desperate attempt to keep this core happy and together while Matthews will be desperate to rebuild his value as he walks himself towards UFA status and wants to maximize his next contract value.
