ParticipantArbitration hearings will be held July 20-Aug. 4 and though the judge can award a one- or two-year contract, the parties can negotiate any deal right up to the hearing date to avoid the process.
If the award exceeds $4.85 million a year, the team can walk away and the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.Considering he got offered $919K I wonder how much more he wants? Sure he got 15 goals but only 22 points and it’s not like he’s physically notable.

ParticipantFor you UG, wasn’t letting me reply directly:
Tavares is the short term cheap vet now so yes. Another thing to note about his upcoming contract is that the NMC becomes modified in the second half of the deal. Therefore if JT doesn’t endure very well, and let’s be fair he’s still punching out at nearly a PPG, they’ll be able to move him.

ParticipantPlan the parade.
You’re making me hope Cowan makes the team more and more and does just fine. I grew up with his aunt and still see her routinely.
Dozzer
ParticipantWell technically they got Micelli, Roy and 7.6 mil cap space left for what Marner would take up in your fantasy world
I’m starting to wonder if UG has invested in Marner jerseys, cards, toys, etc.
I mean seriously, the guy never won anything award and never helped get the leafs past the 2nd round, this is no big loss.
Dozzer
ParticipantBut who the heck is trading for Kampf and Reaves? Also who has a top line winger that they are willing to move? Im sure Tre has a list of possible candidates, but do the leafs even have what the other team would want?
Ya cant mortgage the whole future.
I wish this were NHL 2023 on PS4….probably could get a 4th for Reaves. lolStill early though
SJ might take guys like Kampf now, and Reaves can be buried. After this years bonus Kampf only is owed $3.48 million more of his contract.
Dozzer
Participant3.5M is not a top 6 winger. Move Kampf and Reaves out, and we have like 9M and change, not to mention Jarnkrok.
Let’s see what Tree can do before opening night; it’s only July 2nd.
They’re not spending over $25 million on the top line. They had a top line winger making less than a million last year. Also you guys are also dismissing the possibility of Cowan who won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy just like Marner did the year before his first year in the NHL.
They’re not going to go hand out another $7+ million multi year contract especially when the GM isn’t signing anyone else to multi year contracts.
Dozzer
ParticipantNever said a star, but it’ll be a top 6, not a tweener, a legit top 6 RW. Win now, they’re not going to want to take a massive step back next year, not with how their contracts line up for expiry, especially on the backend.
$3.5 million is about all they’ll spend on the top line winger role now. That would literally put the top line over 25% of the salary cap.
The highly paid Marner is out, and has been replaced with Knies, who is literally only making about $3 million less, hence why they can spend that on the other winger. Which means they’d be spending about the same amount on the top line as they were last year.
The overpaid top six days are done in Toronto. Good. Instead of an $11 million dollar winger and a $900K winger we have a $7.75 million winger and a $3.5 million dollar winger. They’d literally only be saving about $650K from last year doing this on that line.
Dozzer
ParticipantYou gotta figure Kampf and Jarny are on their way to San Jose. They need to get to the cap floor and now that their bonuses are paid, SJ can take on their full cap hits without having to pay real dollars for their contracts.
Yup, and now Jarnkrok will only cost $775K more and Kampf will only cost $3.48 million more post this years bonuses.
Dozzer
ParticipantWhat’s to re-assess? They moved out Marner, they need to fill that roster spot, and the only UFA option is Ehlers, who’s a LW anyways and not a Berube player, so what else are they supposed to do?
They aren’t bringing in another star player. That has been the complaint. The leafs were built wrong. Too many stars and not enough character.
It will be an average winger who can feed Matthews and Knies for that line moving forward and that is it. They’re already spending $20 million on the top line, they won’t be spending much more. The person who gets added will be carried by those two, not a guy who will be expected to carry those two.
