ParticipantHague trade brings in Sissons (another bottom 6C). Roy to Toronto seems more likely.
hope it happens with Marner involved. But I could see it happening as a trade also on its own.
Preds are going to suck for a while, why are they paying 3rd pair that much?
Ya, not sure. They look like they’re doing the Blackhawks thing (surrounding elite young players with overpaid vets) but without the elite young players. Someone needs to rescue Josi.

ParticipantOk, I’m coming around on signing Marchand. Leafs need to bump Kampf and Jarnkrok off the ship after bonus day and if they do they’ll have about 19M to spend on a top 6 FWD and 4 bottom 6 replacements. Nab Roy as one of the pieces and you’ve still got 16M to spend. Sign Marchand to bigger money, shorter term (b/c they really don’t need to back end it and lower the AAV). Spend some money on good 1 yr deals on the 4th line.
If the dust settles this week and the lineup looks like …
Marchand-Matthews-Nylander
Knies-Tavares-McMann
Domi-Laughton-Roy
3 Heavy forechecking types…….I’m good. Maybe drop Laughton down a line and spend on another good 3rd liner.

ParticipantAnd I like the little tampering “leak” Mr. Tree. Well played.

ParticipantForget marchand. What a waste of money he would be on the leafs.
Hes effective as a 3rd liner on a mi e with other good third liners. On the leafs, he’d play second line against tougher comp and wouldnt be as effective.
Use the $8-9m on something else.Agreed. Marchand can go cash in somewhere else.
He took a discount to stay with the bruins and now that he has this cup, why should he take another discount somewhere else? I’m sure someone will pay him $8 million but not the leafs (I hope). I do think if he wants to stay in Florida he takes a discount though.
I don’t mind a bit of an overpay but not for 4 years[/quote]
I wouldn’t do 4 years at that number either. I assume that’s coming from his camp. I like the idea of signing him over someone like Boeser but I’m thinking his value should be something more like $9M for two years then you tack on a couple low # yrs to lower the AAV. Maybe that get’s you down to 3x7M or 4x6M. If he doesn’t take it …move on.
Frankly I don’t hate the top 6 starting off like ..
Domi-Matthews-Nylander
Knies-JT-McMannSpend some money on building up the bottom 6 on top of Laughton and Roy. Maybe shake up the D with a puck mover.

There is talk amongst league executives that Leafs have asked for Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hague in return. It will be interesting to see if this happens.Would be a good bit of business if they get anything more than a 3rd rounder for his rights. Could we get Vegas to take Reaves or Kampf back too ….please?
Lawsie
ParticipantFriegebomb!
Marner to Vegas ….working on trade with Leafs to get rights.
Maybe just a pick next year ….Roy or Howden wouldn’t suck. Something bigger …Karlsson coming this way?
Maybe a 3rd so they can sign him to an 8 year deal and then trade him 3 years from now.
Friedman saying Nic Roy included ..if it gets done. Big 3C fits.
Ya, hopefully he gets Vegas’d in a year or two and ends up in Shitsville.
Apparently he veto’d a few trades over the last year. Isles offered Dobson …Canes Rantanen. I think he’s been planning to end up in Vegas since last summer.

XXX-Laughton-XXXI don’t hate that top 6 to start. If Marner is walking and Marchand is too long/expensive then save your bullets for the trade deadline to add to the top 6. Spend a bunch on some really good 3rd liners. Maybe improve the D. Weaponize that cap space.

Leafs getting Marchand?!?!?!? Seems like an overpay, but…I heard 4 x $9m….absolutely horrible imo. Marchand played great in Florida because he was on the 3rd line with other good players, facing lesser comp. Here he will be 2nd or top line facing stiffer comp.
Also, they moved away from marner’s 10.9 or soon to be 13 to spend 9m of it on a 36 year old? WTF.Horrible if true.
Hope its not.I agree …$9 over 4 years is too much. Two years …fine. But year 3 and 4 have to see that number drop. 9,9,5,1 = $6Mx4 …that’d feel a lot better.
Also – Marchand wasn’t really sheltered. His most common match ups against the Leafs were 88 and 91 and against the Oilers were McJesus and Draisatl. That Lundell/Marchand line got some of the most difficult assignments and they generally kicked ass.

ParticipantJT 4 x 4.38 …atta boy.
Lawsie
ParticipantI “think” ..if they’re comparing the Peterka contract to Knies that the true comps would be 6 x $7M. RFA years worth less than UFA years and Peterka was selling 3 RFA and 2 UFA years. Knies is selling 4 RFA years plus additional UFA years. I’d say Leafs end up doing a 3 yr deal or 6+. 6 or 7 would make sense for both b/c Knies would be 28 or 29 for his next big ticket. Or maybe he takes an 8 yr deal while it’s still available and he’d still be 29/30 when he’s able to negotiate the next one.
6x7M or 7×7.5M or 8×8 ish
But, leafiness and taxes probably end up changing the logic.
Lawsie
Participantanyone see this
Frank Seravalli: If it’s an 8 year deal for Matthew Knies, it’s going to be north of 10; it’s probably going to end up being a 5 year deal – DFO Rundown
ok then.
peterka just got 5 x 7.7 ..so I guess around that thenGuenther in Arizona might be the perfect comparison for Knies. Age, numbers, ….it’s all very close. He signed 8 x 7.14 before the season (early extension). Peterka, a year older then both so there’s one less year of control, slightly better resume because of the extra year, and he gets 7.7 x 5 from Zona’ too.
Leafs need to prioritize signing guys earlier rather than waiting for them to build their resumes and for the Cap to go up.
Lawsie
Participantalso I could see him getting UFA offers like 7 or 8m x 4 or 5 years ~ Sensie
Oh ya ..he could walk like Stamkos if he prioritizes gettin’ paid.
Lawsie
Participantif JT was getting money from another contract, the leafs and JT would still be “wide apart”, thats how it works …Sensie
Truth. Are you saying that if JT is getting an allowance from his mom the Leafs won’t get a discount?!
Seriously though …..Duchene at 4.5M in Dallas gets to shove ~2.9M in his pocket every year. Leafs will have to go ~$6M x 4 for JT to do the same.
Also ..I’m sure Tree is pointing out Nelson is a year younger (and will age/skate better) then JT so that 7.5M comp needs to be viewed accordingly. Fine, you’re a year older so maybe 7.5M x 2 is the comp ..now stick 3 years on the end at $4M, $1M, and $1M …and now you get that down to $21M over 5 yrs. Maybe you have to bump it a bit to account for tax differences.
My limits for JT would be something like …
5×4.6 (8,8,4,2,1)
4×5.5 (8,8,4,2)
3×6.3 (7.5,7.5,4)If he doesn’t like it so be it ….he did nothing significant in the playoffs and is declining. You can rent JT’s at the deadline without destroying your cap for years.
