I suspect the Habs were worried (rightly so) their PK might suffer this season, with the loss of Dvorak and Armia.
Unfortunately, Voleno seems mediocre/below average in the face-off dot, one of Dvorak’s strong points, but is left handed (along with Newhook), which the Habs needed.
Low risk signing that might find a niche in the lineup.

agreed, that’s what I was referring to about what the habs need, under those circumstances he isn’t really an ideal fit in terms of age and contract.
3 to 5 years younger, I think they might have considered it.
there’s also been talk about Nazem Kadri, not sure if he’d be what the habs need though lol.
I think he might be the type of player the Habs need, but he has 4 years left at $7M and will be 39 when the contract is done.
Again, if they were 1 player away, then maybe you make this type of deal.
But right now? Does not make sense.
