ParticipantDepending on how the draft unfolds, I expect 1 of those 1st round picks and a prospect (and some other picks, perhaps) to be traded for help.
But I also would not be surprised to see the Habs try to move up in the draft if someone they like falls.

i’m a little confused about why there are 2 different places to leave comments anyway. would it maybe be better if they streamlined it into one place for comments on each blog? maybe it’s something they’re already working on changing. or i might just be misunderstanding why it’s set up like that.
I think you are playing in Pat’s sandbox….
EDIT: Need to carry over the small jokes, just getting them started.

ParticipantFido pondered:
alright, time to for serious business. assuming Bennett will remain in FLA or will be too expensive, my #1 target is Larkin in DET. GO HUGO GO!
He has a full NTC.
I am just not sure there is a top 2 center available out there (potentially willing to waive to go to the Habs), or a developing younger player that does not carry significant risk (turn into another Dach / Newhook scenario).
Gonna be interesting to see what they actually do, but I am not sure how much magic Hugues and Gorton have in them to make something like Larkin happen.

ParticipantPat exclaimed:
yeah, just looked at that contract again, it’s already pretty bad and it isn’t going to get better lol
Yeah, $10.5 for 50-ish points (60 in a good year) until 2029/30 (5 more years).
And he is already 32.
I mean, good for him, but no one wants that contract.

ParticipantPat made an interesting observation:
in the last 6 years Corey Perry was in the cup final for 5 of them, without winning once… tabarnak loll
Reminds me of Hossa.
He was traded to the the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008, who lost in the finals to the Red Wings.
The next year, he signed as a free Agent with the Wings, who then lost in the final to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
I think he ended up winning 2-3 cups with the Hawks later on, but that free agency / swap teams / “if you cannot beat them, join them” mentality to win a cup and failed, always cracked me up.
Also, good on Perry. He has played a lot of hockey at the end of his career still chasing another cup.

ParticipantPat sarcastically exclaimed:
if the Flames add Dustin Wolf, it’s a deal I’d consider
I’d settle for Rasmus Anderson… and they can keep Huberdeau.

ParticipantCrappy way to end the season.
But now it is time to focus on what crazy stuff Hughes and Gorton are gonna pull off in the next few weeks.
So hockey is interesting again!

ParticipantA dead chicken say what?
The number #2 centre would be my main focus this summer, thats for sure. They may want to move away from Laine and add another top 6 winger as well, but I think at least one of Dach, Laine or Newhook is on mtl top 6 next season.
There are really no good long-term #2 center fits out there, as of right now.
That is why I think they find a mid-level temp player til something better comes along, nail down their top 4 D with a trade for a RHD (some out there on the market), and then leverage their surplus of D prospects down the road for help on the second line.
Build a surplus of strength from which you can deal for something you really want down the road, when available.
They are not winning the cup next year, but should be improved regardless.
That is how I see it, at least.

Mash is a blogger now? wtf
No, I am not a blogger.
Just started a new thread, given Hugo is away for a bit and wanted to see what people thought the Habs will do in the next few weeks.
Threw down my thoughts / ideas to start off the convo, which surprisingly lasted 3 pages (granted, shorter then HB pages, but still…)

ParticipantPat’s deep thoughts included:
Colorado is gonna have to dump some salary if they want to make such a move…
That Nichushkin contract looks like an anchor ($6.5M til 2029/30)… the guy produces, when he is not injured or out for long periods dues to other reasons (which seems like every season).
They also just signed Nelson to a 3 x $7.5M contract to be their #2C.
And if Landeskog is really back, that is another $7M they did not have to worry about the last few years.
I just do not see how they make it work, plus fill in other holes in their lineup.
Never say never, but this seems unlikely.

ParticipantFido rightly stated:
Pens are in trouble. no prospects, old vets with huge contracts, a GM not sure anyone should trust….
They had a good run there for a long time, and passing the torch from Lemieux to Crosby (and Malkin) just gave them even more success.
But that is going to be a very long re-build.
And you are right, they do not have the right GM for that (or, if he should even be a GM). That being said, I am pretty sure ownership forced the Karlsson trade (And a few other decisions).

it’s all Erik Karlsson’s fault loll
Wonder how much more minus he could go with Laine and Demidov on his wings.

yeah, I don’t understand why the “reply” option is there but not functioning at all, it seems like it’s just a matter of activating it or something… I still prefer HB for the technical aspect and wouldn’t care if we continued posting there, but oh well.
It is OK.
You can just admit you miss EK.
(and maybe even Pete.)
