Why is price still a Hab?

re: the Price contract / cap space situation—
The Price contract going out before season open is the more urgent part, right?
That way The Habs start banking cap space immediately.
Part 2: “acquire player(s) to improve the team” might become easier as the season moves on.
Or is there something more to these moves?

That’s gotta be the Habs biggest mistake over the last 4 years.

In 2021, Montreal lost the Stanley Cup final in 5 games.
4 years later, after a rebuild on the fly, they made it back to the playoffs.
They did that by making many very smart moves and very few mistakes.

So, if you are proposing a trade with them, you have to ask: Would a really smart, well run team like Montreal agree to this trade?”
I don’t think Montreal will just take back “stuff” to get rid of the Price contract.
Pay with draft picks? Sure, they have all their own picks (plus a few extra) over the next 3 years.
Trade the Price contract *and* picks plus a young player for a veteran who can help them right now? Also sounds like something they would do.
But, trade the Price contract for some other team’s leftovers, problems, or bad contracts? I don’t think that is likely to happen.

(something I posted earlier this summer, before people started showing up)

A look at the trade for the rotting corpse of Shea Weber(‘s contract):
    ————————————
    March 7th, 2025 (w/Utah)
    Hawks gave:
    2026 5th round pick

    Hawks received:
    Weber contract
    Victor Soderstrom
Aku Raty (went to play in Finland)
    ————————————-
    June 13th, 2025 (w/Boston)
    Hawks gave:
    Victor Soderstrom

    Hawks received:
    Ryan Mast
    2025 7th round pick
    ————————————
    June 28th, 2025 (w/Florida)
    Hawks gave:
    2025 7th round pick

    Hawks received:
    2026 7th round pick
    ————————————
    Overall the Hawks gave up:
1.25 million dollars (Weber contract is only $1mm/year real money in the ’24/25 and ’25/26 seasons. Approx. 0.25mm in ’24/25 and $1mm in ’25/26)
    2026 5th round pick

    Overall the Hawks received:
    7.86 million dollar cap hit
    Ryan Mast (AHL D-man)
    2026 7th round pick

Seems alright. I wouldn’t get too happy or sad about this. Cheap emergency cap floor compliance.

Pittsburgh is a decent destination guess for the Price contract.
They are well above the floor now, but they may be trading away several contracts.

Carey Price’s contract should be traded this upcoming week, with sources suggesting San Jose, Chicago or Pittsburgh as destinations.

Capwages shows San Jose at ~$66.2mm with a 22 player roster. But they can roster the Couture contract to gain $8mm and get above the cap by almost $4mm.
Chicago has the Weber contract already and likely won’t “need” the Price contract for the cap floor.

Pittsburgh might be a good guess, if they start trading guys and need to stay above the floor.

Will be very interesting for sure, to see how it shakes out.

My guess is the Hawks try Burakovsky w/ Bedard, at least for a little bit.

If they put Moore or Vanacker up w/ Bedard, the other wing is likely to be Dickinson
or someone else with experience who plays more of a 200 foot game.

I don’t have strong feelings on specific rankings between players.
Some guys have a higher likelihood of securing an NHL job, but less likely to become very good.
Some are the opposite– they will either be really good or complete busts.

I do have a strong thought on Kevin Korchinski:
Picked 7th overall, his progress to this point is disappointing.
However, I am not of the opinion that they should “trade him while they can still get *something* for him”.
I think they should keep trying him until he cannot be retained anymore.
The Hawks gave up on Gustav Forsling days after he turned 23.
The Canes (known for developing D-men) gave up on him 18 months later. We know how that turned out.

I’m not saying KK is the next Forsling. KK was picked 120 spots higher, and should show more progress, sooner than a 5th round guy like Forsling.
I’m saying that, even though he was such a high pick, he might just need a lot of time to develop.

When you ball hairs go while, you know you are old.

As me dear ol’ Pappy used to say:
“growing old sucks, but it beats the alternative”.

I’m just trying to die as slowly as possible.

also, SG covered “into the void” and i’ve always loved it. i’m sure you’ve already heard it but if you haven’t, check it out!

yeah, they used a native American speech for lyrics right? Very weird but cool.

I’m packing it in, turn off the lights when you leave.

Sabbath: All (8) original Ozzy albums plus Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules and you have all you need.
Deep Purple In Rock was made as an answer to the first (2) Led Zeppelin albums and is every bit as good imho.

Listen to whatever turns you on.
I don’t believe in the tiresome “my music is better than your music” arguments.

Superunknown is a great album. I still listen to Black Hole Sun and Spoonman.
