ParticipantIf the Flyers want to now copy FLA by getting significantly bigger, then why focus on speed earlier in the Briere era? The Panthers are at best an average skating speed team. Briere traded one of his best assets in the organization (Gauthier) for a small Dman. Re signed a small forward long term in TK. Only 1st round pick he has selected over 6’0 ft tall Bonk. I like O’Brien over Desnoyers, it is close. There is a gap for me with Hagens above those two.
All that being written, it would be quite a moment if Briere goes with McQueen for the ultimate boom or bust pick. — Trox88
Simple answer… they Flyers have a long-standing habit of chasing Cups that have already been won. It’s the main reason why they’ve lacked identity for so long.
While I get that every league is a copy-cat league, the Flyers seem to take it to extremes. We want to emulate the Blues. We need speedy guys. We need guys that can skate. We’re suddenly too small and need to get bigger. It’s hard to have a plan for success when what you want to be changes every year.
A franchise that once set the trend now chases every trend, yet can’t figure out why success eludes them.

ParticipantI’m happy with Sanheim as their #1 Dman. He’s likely in the Top 20 for Dmen in the league but they need a helluva lot more around him and behind him. He’d look even better if the Flyers had that. A Top 4 plug-in would move the needle for THIS team. Even FLA went out and traded for Jones at the deadline. — FlyerFrank
If Sanheim is your #1, you are not a playoff team (which is pretty obvious at this point).

ParticipantThe Flyers have two surpluses, draft picks and enough cap space to sign a Top 4 dman and a goalie this off season. They have an upside even if you don’t want to see it. — FlyerFrank
The problem is they need a #1 defenseman. Just getting another top 4 plug-in doesn’t move the needle.

ParticipantThe moves FLA and EDM made are what made them contenders. — FlyerFrank
It was mostly drafting made them both contenders. Yes, the Tkachuk trade helped put Florida over the top, but outside of said trade, the moves both teams made were complimentary players that added depth needed to contend. The Flyers are nowhere near that point.

ParticipantYou need to take a closer look at how the current top teams were actually constructed, not how Hextall and Fletcher deconstructed the Flyers.
Are you seriously implying the current Philadelphia Flyers are in the same position as the Panthers and Oilers?
It’s nice that they made those moves, but they were already contenders. The only thing the Flyers are in contention for is a lottery pick, and I have yet to see anything to convince me that No Plan Dan is the guy to get them where they hope to be.

Participantto make a long story short: muckers and grinders along with hard work will win a cup. – yes its me 2050
Sadly, that’s what it’s become. I’ve always thought the Flyers way was a mix of hard-nosed play and skill, and the Flyers really haven’t had that in quite a while now.

ParticipantCeci was a Top 4 guy for a team that went to the conference finals. Ekblad won’t sign here. That’s pure fantasy. Take a closer look at how the current top teams were actually constructed, not how Hextall and Fletcher deconstructed the Flyers. — FlyerFrank
Just because Ceci got traded to a contender doesn’t mean he’s a guy who puts the Flyers into playoff contention. Might he improve the top 4? Maybe. I would much rather see a player that moves the needle rather than just another stop-gap guy because the Flyers have nothing in the pipeline that gets them closer to where they want to be.

ParticipantIf you’re going to bring Terry Gordy into this…
Sadly, I remember watching this premier on WCCW’s Saturday night broadcast out of Dallas. At the time, we all thought it was pretty bad-ass.

ParticipantNo.
I may be totally wrong here, but there seems to be an interesting dynamic to this discussion. Be it here, HB, or X, it seems like those who are receptive to a Giroux reunion are younger fans… guys who really have never seen this team have sustained success (and the stuff I’ve read from Jamie Baskow over the years leads me to believe he’s in this category – and this isn’t a knock against him, just that he has a far different view of this franchise than I do). While Giroux could help in the areas mentioned, it’s not a long-term fix, which is what a team that claims they’re rebuilding should be looking for.
I’ll pose a question to everyone here on the board (because I’m really interested to see the variety of answers)… when someone says “The Flyers Way,” what do you immediately think of?

Participanti dont see any direction. will know in the next month — yes its me 2050
Unfortunately, we’ve been saying “we’ll see” about Flyers offseasons for far too long now.
I’ve been a fan for a long time (old enough to remember the SC wins as a kid), and have never seen this franchise as directionless as they’ve been for the past decade or so.

ParticipantAttempt to what? Tank for the indefinite future? I’m obviously not sure what the Flyers will do this off season. But I think they need to get better and can if they use the main tools available to them, draft picks and cap space, wisely.
The Flyers need five or more difference makers to compete for the Cup . . . and even then . . . — FlyerFrank
Since the inception of the salary cap, when have the Flyers used it wisely?
Keep in mind, the Flyers have a long history of not learning from their mistakes.

ParticipantThe 4th for Tippett and one of the later 1sts is a no-brainer……why do you think they shouldnt — KINGKENZO
I would think so too, but then I’m not of the same mindset as Danny Briere… that is, I think we’ve seen what Tippett is going to be, whereas Danny still thinks he will improve and become the player he rewarded with an 8 year deal.
