With options like Nicolas Hague already gone, Detroit has some work to do. The last day of June was busy for General Manager Steve Yzerman. One trade and three extensions were all wrapped up ahead of the Free Agent Frenzy.
In a bit of a “Maya Culpa”, Vladimir Tarasenko was sent to Minnesota for future considerations. The two way forward didn’t live up to expectations last season and has a fresh start with the Wild. Detroit opens a roster spot and cap space with the move.
Three subsequent transactions set the table for any possible additions Detroit could make. Jonatan Berggren, Patrick Kane and Albert Johansson were all extended. The team now has just over 17 million dollars in cap space to work with.
Jonatan Berggren gets extended
Affectionately known as “Johnny Burgers”, Berggren Ranked 6th in goals with 12 last season. His 24 point campaign came about with limited usage and some highlight reel goals. A more offensive assignment could benefit the player and the team.
An exciting mix of breakaway and rush goals certainly forecast a strong potential with the right assignments. Berggren can be fresh off the bench and take a pass out of the defensive zone for a great opportunity. Coach Todd McLellan has been able to get a lot more out of the roster as a whole.
Berggren’s new deal is an opportunity to step into a role for strong secondary scoring. The Red Wings need more players outside of the top six contributing and JB is certainly someone who can help.
It’s Showtime again in Detroit
Future Hall of Fame winger Patrick Kane will return to Detroit for another season. Kane’s recovery from surgery was beyond impressive. Kane put up 59 points (21G and 38A) in 72 games as a huge part of the team’s offense.
The end of season combination of Kane, Marco Kasper and Alex Debrincat was arguably Detroit’s top line. Kane’s creativity is evident in all three zones. His presence lends to an up tempo and at times relentless forecheck.
Debrincat and Kasper are benefitting from what may be the top US born player in history. That pair should continue to grow their game in an exceptionally rare opportunity with this extension. Kane can be a huge part of the team’s search for a post season appearance.
The Free Agent Wishlist
The remaining needs for Detroit are very clear. A top four defenseman and a top six forward. Unlike Kane’s line, Dylan Larkin has yet to solidify a second wing. Larkin and Lucas Raymond are a constant but the left side variable is concerning.
The market has thinned out significantly with players extending or being traded. Detroit has to make a big move to garner fan confidence heading into the summer. This may be the most significant year for Yzerman’s tenure as Detroit’s general manager.
