Rick Tocchet’s Philadelphia Flyers shut out the Boston Bruins, 2-0, in preseason action at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday evening.
Matvei Michkov (1st of the preseason) bagged an early first period goal for a 1-0 lead. The second period was scoreless Cole Knuble (2nd) added an early third period rebound tally.
Joseph Woll earned the win with the 28-save shutout.

Michkov hustled up a scoring chance after he exited the box. At 4:02, Michkov potted a rebound that deflected off Porter Martone. Helge Grans,got the secondary assist for his initial point shot.

Knuble cleaned up a rebound at the net after Jett Luchanko took it the house and Jacob kept the puck alive.

The Good
- The Flyers dominated the first period. Yes, that’s expected with their A team against an AHL lineup for Boston (the opposite of Tuesday’s game). However, the Flyers delivered on it, and that was important.
- Both Knuble and Luchanko strung together their third straight good preseason showings. For Luchanko, it was his third assist of the exhibition slate. Meanwhile, Knuble played in a different lineup slot and delivered there, too.
- The Flyers went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, including a 5-on-3.
- Woll was sharp and on his angles all night.
The Bad
- The Flyers got a bit sleepy at times during the second period in particular.
- Philadelphia’s power play very much remains a work in progress. They did create a couple looks on their first power play.
- Another game, another injury. Dept defenseman Helge Grans left during the first period. He did not return. Better news: Nikita Grebenkin (game-high four hits) returned in the third period after missing a couple shifts.
The Ugly
- Trevor Zegras took an equipment violation minor penalty is the second period. He received a warning for tucking in his jersey and not having the tie-down fastened. Subsequently, he received a minor penalty. Later, Rick Tocchet prevented a second such violation by reminding Michkov to tie down his jersey.
- The Zegras minor became a two-man disadvantage when Luchanko took a hooking minor.
