The Winnipeg Jets 2025-2026 NHL season received its final nail in the coffin Saturday night; not mathematically, but realistically. The team was crushed 7-1 by the Philadelphia Flyers in front of a sell-out crowd at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.

Scott Arniel

In his post-game press conference, the Jets head coach was asked what was the reason for the Jets no-showing in such a pivotal game in front a sell-out crowd on a Saturday night? His only answer was that no one was ready. When asked why that was the case? He had no answer. Arniel has been the Jets head coach for 2 seasons now. Although he has 1 year left on his contract, I believe the time has come to move on from him as the Jets bench boss. Yes, he did guide the team to its first and only Presidents Trophy last year. But, the team needed a Manitoba Miracle just to move onto the second round of the playoffs where they were clearly overmatched by the Dallas Stars and eliminated in 6 games.

Garrett Brown

The NCAA mens Frozen Four tournament wrapped up this weekend with the Denver Pioneers winning their 3rd National Championship in 5 years after defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 2-1. Jets prospect Garrett Brown assisted on both the Pioneers goals. Brown was the Jets 4th round pick in the 2022 draft. Brown is listed at 6’2 and right-handed. He has now won the National Championship twice with the Pioneers. Fair to assume, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is trying his hardest to get the American Brown to sign his entry-level contract with the team rather than returning to the NCAA for another season. One way to get Brown signed would be to allow him to play these last 3 games with the Jets rather than assigning him to the Moose right away. With Elias Salomonsson’s season likely over due to Concussion symptoms, and the Jets playoff hopes all but done, there is no reason for Brown not playing on the bottom defence pair in these last 3 games.

Milestones in reach

In these last the games, there are a couple of noteworthy player milestones that can be achieved. Mark Scheifele is sitting on 99 points for the season. He has never eclipsed 100 points in a single season. Gabriel Vilardi is sitting on 29 goals and has played in all 79 games. Vilardi has never reached 30 goals in a single season and has never stayed healthy enough to play an entire 82 game season. Both milestones would be great for him.

The Jets return to action Monday night when they visit the Vegas Golden Knights.
