Jets Take Off On Five-Game Road Trip

The Winnipeg Jets were shut out, 3-0, at home on Sunday afternoon by the Minnesota Wild. On Wednesday, they visit the Washington Capitals.

The process against Minnesota was pretty good despite the final score. The Jets controlled the flow of the game for long stretches. However, they could not beat Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt, who was brilliant. He has now recorded three shutouts in his last four games. The Wild also snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Jets.

Jets look for another strong start

Sunday’s match was the annual “Hockey Fights Cancer” game in Winnipeg. The Jets came out flying. The ice was clearly tilted in their favor early. Despite several great scoring chances, they could not get the ice-breaker in the first period and the game went into the first intermission scoreless.

Nevertheless, the Jets will looks for a similar opening period in Washington.

Winnipeg allows another shorthanded goal

For the second consecutive game, the Jets top PP unit allowed a short-handed goal. This turn of events is just not acceptable. The Jets big guns really need to protect the puck better and backcheck with better effort when on the power play. Right now, they are too casual.

In the Minnesota game, Brock Faber that scored short-handed and put the Wild ahead 2-0. It was a pivotal play in the game. The Jets need to nip the problem in the bud on the road trip.

Pionk Injured

Neal Pionk played just over 2 minutes in this game and left with a lower body injury after his second shift of the game. Thankfully he is just day to day. The injury looked much worse initially. With Connor Hellebuyck already sidelined for 4-6 weeks, the Jets cannot afford to lose any of their top four defenceman for an extended period of time.

Jets recall Salomonsson

The Jets have called up top defence hopeful Elias Salomonsson from the Manitoba Moose. He will make his NHL debut Wednesday night. After both Brad Lambert and Nikita Chibrikov failed to seize the opportunity and stick with the big club, Salomonsson will now get his shot.

Out of all the Jets prospects, Salomonsson had the best training camp by far. Based on the line combinations in practice, he will be paired with Dylan Samberg. When Samberg and Salomonsson were paired together for a couple of preseason games, they were lights out good. If he plays well, Salomonsson may not go back to AHL. All eyes will be on Salomonsson on Wednesday in Washington.
