Latest Oilers News And Rumors

The Edmonton Oilers had a record-setting night on Sunday. Despite one of their biggest stars not being in the lineup, Edmonton defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-0. Leon Draisaitl is in Germany due to a family illness. In his absence, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jack Roslovic moved up in the lineup, and both played really well.

Speaking of Nugent-Hopkins, Sunday’s game was his 1,000th career game. He is the only Oilers player to record 1,000 games with the Oilers only. His power-play goal was the first goal of the game on Sunday, and would end up being the game-winner.

For the first time in the modern era, Edmonton recorded back-to-back shutouts with five or more goals in each game. They beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-0 on Saturday and then followed it up with the 5-0 win over the Blues on Sunday. The two shutout victories have the Oilers sitting comfortably in second place in the Pacific Division with 58 points. Edmonton is only two points back of the division-leading Vegas Golden Knights.

Oilers Odd Men Out

With Connor Ingram posting a 5-3-1 record with a .917 SV% and 2.22 GAA, it appears that Calvin Pickard might be the odd man out in the Oilers crease now that Tristan Jarry is back from injury. One has to wonder if the Philadelphia Flyers will have interest in Pickard due to their recent goalie issues. The Flyers and Pickard have some history, as he played in 11 games for them during the 2018-19 season. He posted an 8-4-2 record for them before getting traded to the Arizona Coyotes.

The other odd-man out in Edmonton is Andrew Mangiapane. Oilers GM Stan Bowman would love it if he could package Pickard and Mangiapane together in a deal. However, two separate trades might be the only way for Bowman to free up some cap space before the NHL trade deadline. With Vegas adding Rasmus Andersson over the weekend, Edmonton might need to do something stay competitive with the Golden Knights.
