Detroit winger Jonatan Berggren is at a key pivotal moment in his career. The last entry examined his potential for the Red Wings. Another draft pick who looks ready to start his NHL career is 2022 fourth-round pick Amadeus Lombardi. Lombardi has come around as a prospect for Detroit. Limited to 44 games last season, he scored 19 goals and 21 assists for the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 21-year-old center seems to have skills similar to Marco Kasper.
As with Kasper, Lombardi could solidify his place in Detroit.
ADDING TO THE CORE:
Detroit saw Kasper center the team’s most consistent line. His deployment increased after a coaching change in December. Each opportunity saw him rise up to the challenge. Lombardi could follow closely on that trajectory. Depth at center has evaded Detroit during the rebuild. The additions in free agency have not lived up to expectations. Another center from the organizational pipeline would be welcome. This path is the stated core of the Yzerplan.
Amadeus, Amadeus
Take a look at Lombardi’s scoring summary for last season. Four multi-goal games, four goals scored in three games to open the season. A November injury derailed him as a strong contributor, but he later returned to form. At nearly a point per game pace, Lombardi is a standout. Training to avoid injury and adding strength will go a long way. The question is, can he replicate that success in the NHL? A strong transition will go a long way for the team.
Dylan Larkin, Marco Kasper, and Amadeus Lombardi may be the future top 3 centers. Lombardi could switch to wing as he adjusts to the top league. The opportunity for prospects to succeed is the best in 30 years. Lombardi may be the top candidate to grab a spot in Detroit.
