The Utah Mammoth are a young team moving in the right direction. Their early-season success is truly exceeding expectations. Despite their recent loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Mammoth have a 9-5-0 record through 14 games. They trail the Colorado Avalanche by three points for top spot in the Central Division.
As a team, the Mammoth have increased their offence from a year ago. At the end of October, they were tied for fifth in the NHL with 3.64 goals-for per game. Their 2024-25 average was 2.93, which ranked 20th. The increase in offense by more than half a goal per game is remarkable. Although there may be some regression in their offense in the latter part of the season, you have to respect them as one of the league’s most improved teams, and a serious offensive threat.
Leading the way for Utah is Nick Schmaltz with 18 points in 14 games. Next is Clayton Keller with 14 points in 14 games. Last season, Keller was the only Utah player registering more than a point per game. Dylan Guenther (13 points), newly re-signed Logan Cooley (12 points), and Mikhail Sergachev (11 points) round out the Mammoth’s top five in scoring. Mammoth rookie Dmitriy Simashev recorded his first NHL points with an assist during Wednesday night’s game against the Maple Leafs.
Mammoth Look to Continue Strong Start
There is still a long season ahead for this group. However, it is good to see them clicking so early in the season. Having a strong start makes it easier when a losing streak hits. Every season has ups and downs. The Mammoth are enjoying the ups right now. Hopefully, for them, there will be more ups than downs in their first season under their new identity.
Utah will continue their trip to eastern Canada with games on Saturday (Montreal Canadiens) and Sunday (Ottawa Senators). It will be the team’s second set of back-to-backs in the same week. Talk about a tough road trip. The Mammoth will return home on Wednesday, November 12th, to host the Buffalo Sabres.
