In recent weeks, we’ve spent time talking about the Montreal Canadiens as a group. The big picture: We’ve looked at the roster, talked about the position depth, projected opening night line combinations, and tried to figure out just how competitive Montreal can be this season.
But as much as hockey is a team game, every successful franchise comes down to the players themselves. And when you compare those players individually to the rest of the league, where do the Canadiens actually stack up?
This week, we’re examing The Athletic’s annual Players Tiers rankings as a measuring stick. The rankings place players from across the NHL and place them into different categories based on the level of player they are right now. In a second phase, younger players are evaluated, with an eye towards their talent ceiling.
Do they have enough players at the top end of the roster to compete with the NHL’s best? How does Montreal’s overall talent level compare to other organizations around the league? And perhaps just as importantly, as this young group continues to develop, how much higher could some of these players climb in the years ahead?
