Oilers Sign True Starter In Andersen

The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Frederik Andersen to a one-year contract. Andersen’s deal will carry a $1 million cap hit with $1.8 million in performance bonuses.

His bonuses apply to games played in both the regular season and the playoffs. The 36-year-old will receive a $600,000 bonus for playing 10 regular-season games. He will receive a $400,000 bonus for playing 20 regular-season games. For the playoffs, he will earn $200,000 for each playoff round won where he plays at least 50% of the games. The deal comes with a 15-team no-trade list.

Andersen just won his first Stanley Cup championship as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes. His regular season wasn’t great last year. He posted a 16-14-5 record, with a 3.05 GAA and a .874 SV%, and a 3.05. However, he managed to turn things around in the playoffs. Andersen went 13-2 with a 1.89 GAA and a .910 SV%.

The Oilers will be Andersen’s fourth NHL team. He spent time with the Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Hurricanes.

Oilers Hope Andersen Stays Healthy

Andersen has struggled to stay healthy over the last three seasons, playing 16 games in 2023-24, 22 games in 2024-25, and 35 games last year. The veteran goaltender dealt with blood clots during the 2023-24 season. Then, he suffered a knee injury in the 2024-25 season, and this season he dealt with concussion issues.

During the Stanley Cup Final, Andersen dealt with a knee issue during Game 2. This paved the way for Brandon Bussi to help close out their six-game series against the Vegas Golden Knights. It’s safe to say that the Hurricanes would not have made it to the Final without Andersen’s play in the first three rounds.

Despite the knee injury, Andersen is one of the better goaltenders in the league when healthy. Since his debut, his 122.41 goals saved above expected ranks third among all goalies behind only Igor Shesterkin and Connor Hellebuyck. He might be 36, but the Oilers are getting a stud when healthy. Something the team hasn’t really had in the Connor McDavid era.
