Parayko Said No-Go To Buffalo; Now What?

The St. Louis Blues were widely reported to be potential sellers heading into the NHL Trade Deadline, but with less than 24 hours remaining before the deadline hits, the organization has been surprisingly quiet. So far, the only actual move made by the Blues was placing Mathieu Joseph on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination. That move cleared some space and signaled that the front office was at least willing to make changes, but it definitely wasn’t the blockbuster deal that many fans expected when the trade chatter around this team first started picking up.

The biggest story of the last day or so has been the trade that almost happened involving Colton Parayko. Reports surfaced that the Buffalo Sabres were in serious discussions with St. Louis about a deal that would have sent Parayko to Buffalo in exchange for top prospect Radim Mrtka along with a first-round pick. From the Blues’ perspective, that kind of return would have been extremely strong. Getting a high-end prospect plus a first-rounder for a defenseman in his 30s would have been a major step toward retooling the roster and building for the future.

However, the deal ultimately didn’t happen because Parayko exercised the protection built into his contract. Like many veteran players, he holds a no-trade clause, which gives him the final say on where he’s willing to go. Parayko reportedly chose not to waive that clause for Buffalo, which effectively shut the door on the trade before it could cross the finish line. While some fans might be frustrated by that outcome, it’s important to remember that the clause exists for a reason. Parayko negotiated that protection into his deal, and he has every right to decide where he wants to continue his career.

That said, the situation may not be completely closed. According to reports from Kevin Weekes, Parayko might be open to waiving his no-trade clause for certain teams out west. Two clubs mentioned were the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. If that information proves accurate, it suggests that there could still be movement before the deadline, especially if one of those teams decides to push for a veteran right-shot defenseman to strengthen their blue line.

Beyond Parayko, several other big names from the Blues roster have been floating around the rumor mill as well. Players like Robert Thomas, Jordan Binnington, Brayden Schenn, and Jordan Kyrou have all reportedly drawn interest from different teams across the league. Out of that group, Thomas’ name probably surprised people the most considering he’s one of the core pieces of the Blues’ future. Reports have suggested that the asking price for Thomas is extremely high, which has caused many interested teams to back off rather quickly.

At this point, it feels like the Blues’ front office is listening to offers on just about everyone while trying to determine what direction they want to take. Whether that means committing to a retool, a larger rebuild, or simply making a few strategic moves remains to be seen. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, it’s still possible that something big could happen — but for now, a lot of the buzz around St. Louis has been about deals that almost happened rather than ones that actually did.
