It was a battle of disjointed defence on Tuesday night when the Calgary Flames cruised past a starless Seattle Kraken squad to push to 2-1-0 in the 2025 preseason. Lets dive into a few notes, thoughts, and observations.
Kerless Whisper
The first star of the night was Rory Kerins, who corralled a puck back to the point for a tip-in shot on Calgary’s first goal in the first and sniped a powerplay goal in tight early in the second.
The question with the five-foot-ten center seems to be: where does he fit?
He’s no burner. He’ll have a hard time displacing a veteran. The Flames have a hard enough time getting their current volume shooters their own line to fire at will while still deploying designated checking lines.
Time will tell. Craig Conroy says there is opportunity to take a spot. We’ll see.
Battle Zars
Connor Zary looked right back in form.
That includes taking a beating from the opposition. Kraken players were knocking him around all night. Nothing he isn’t accustomed to. The 23 year old picked up a primary on Kerins’ second period marker.
Not Quite Engaged
Here is a fun breakdown of Seattle’s lone goal.
Can you tell that it’s still early in the preseason? It’s a good thing some guys don’t have to worry about making the team.
Lets Go Brzus’in
A huge response from Hunter Brzustewicz after a rather soft rookie camp defensively. A primary and a secondary assist on Calgary’s first two goals. Much better at recovering pucks compared to last week.
Dynamic Duo
There wasn’t a ton of flash to the duo of Sam Honzek and Sam Morton, but there was certainly plenty of jam.
Those two could start the season running the second penalty kill unit. If only there was roster space for both.
Dynamic Duo Two Point Ou-O
There were some signs of brilliance between the offensively eclectic Zayne Parekh and sniper Matthew Coronato. If there is a player on the roster to get the most out of Calgary’s best shot (according to Ryan Huska), it’s Parekh, who has a tendency to find seams that no one else can.
The Flames play the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night. Stay tuned for lineups, analysis, and news!
