The Flyers are close to hiring former Washington Capitals head coach and longtime NHL assistant coach Todd Reirden to Rick Tocchet’s coaching staff. Reirden would likely take over the main role that the now-departed Brad Shaw performed under Rick Tocchet: defense and penalty kill.
The announcement is not official yet,. However, Flyers sourced do not deny the story. The story was first reported by Frank Seravalli (Daily Faceoff) and also by Snow the Goalie/ On Pattison’s Anthony SanFilippo.
During his most recent stint, Reirden ran the Pittsburgh Penguins’ struggling power play. However, his biggest success came as the defense/PK director and associate coach for the Stanley-Cup winning Washington Capitals under Barry Trotz. Reirden succeeded Trotz as Capitals’ head coach for two seasons (89-46-16). However, Washington dismissed him after back-to-back playoff exits in the first round.
To be honest, Reirden’s personalty may be better suited to the assistant coach role than head coaching. The 54-year-old Bowling Green University graduate is known for being calm, composed and cerebral. Oddly enough, my most vivid recollection of Reirden came during hies head coaching tenure with Washington. Uncharacteristically, he lost his temper and flipped out at his players on the bench during a horrid first period against the Flyers.
Once the hiring is set, Reirden will join Yaroslav “Yogi” Svejkovsky and Jay Varady on Tocchet’s staff. Most likely, Svejkovsky will run the power play and coach the forward (Rocky Thompson’s former role). Varady will take over Darryl Williams’ role (widespread tasks delegated by the head coach and working side-by-side in consultation with the rest of the staff).
