Quick Hits: World Championships, Flyers Daily

The IIHF World Championships are done. The Edmonton Oilers took a two games to one lead over the Dallas Stars with a convincing win on Saturday. In the East, the Florida Panthers have a chance on Monday to wrap up their third straight Eastern Conference championship. The Panthers lead their series with the Carolina Hurricanes, three games to zero. Meanwhile, here are your Flyers Quick Hits for Memorial Day 2025.

World Championships: USA takes gold, Sweden wins bronze

Team USA has won its first IIHF World Championship since 1933. The Americans captured gold on Saturday in a 1-0 overtime decision against Switzerland. Tage Thompson (Buffalo Sabres) scored the match’s only goal, capturing the gold medal at 2:02 of overtime past Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni. As a consolation prize, Genoni received tournament MVP honors in addition to a silver medal.

In the bronze medal game, Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson got the starting assignment. Ersson stopped 16 of 18 shots in a 6-2 win over Denmark. Ersson finished the tournament with a 4-0-0 record, 1.16 goals against average, .934 save percentage and two shutouts. Ersson outplayed Tre Kronor teammate Jacob Markstrom (New Jersey Devils) during the tournament.

Meanwhile, Flyers winger Travis Konecny finished the tournament with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in eight games to finish fifth in tourney scoring. Team Canada linemate Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche) also finished with 13 points. Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim had three points (2g, 1a) while averaging 18:33 of ice time. Playing mostly on the third forward line, Flyers winger Tyson Foerster had three points (2g, 1a) in seven games.
