Rangers Fall to Ducks, CK20/Troubs Honored

On a night where backstories took priority over the game on the ice, the New York Rangers failed to show up offensively as well as without any level of passion in their 4-1 loss to the Ducks. The only passion shown was by the fans, who feted Chris Kreider in his return to MSG, and to a certain extent, Jacob Trouba, Igor Shesterkin was the only player who displayed any level of emotion, destroying his stick after heading off the ice following the loss, while Mika Zibanejad was suspended for missing a team meeting yesterday am, No time to rest, as Vancouver is in town tonight.

Game recap:

Rangers lines vs. Ducks:

Cuylle-Miller-Sheary
Panarin-Trocheck-Lafrenière
Berard-Laba-Brodzinski
Raddysh-Carrick-Rempe

Gavrikov-Schneider
Soucy-Borgen
Vaakanainen-Robertson

Shesterkin
Quick

Scratches: Zibanejad (healthy, missed team practice), Morrow, Chmelař
LTIR: Fox (upper-body injury), Edström (lower-body injury)

A few thoughts:

1) Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba: neither former Ranger had a material impact on the game. Same with Ryan Strome and Frank Vatrano. But the majority of the jerseys in the crowd had Kreider’s name and number on the back, with a good portion of the population in attendance there to give CK20 his proper thanks. Somewhat similar for Trouba, but to a much lesser extent, given what Kreider provided and meant to the Rangers’ fanbase. Bad job by MSG network, not showing the tributes live.

2) Game play: uninspired, no energy, no fire, kind of what we saw at times a month ago. An eminently winnable game, even when tied 1-1 after two periods, was thrown in the garbage. The only fire shown was by Igor Shesterkin after the contest. His anger likely stems from the goal allowed with three seconds remaining, where the other five Rangers on the ice basically stopped playing. If everyone else had that kind of passion and drive, no way they would have lost last night.

3) Power play: for the love of all that is holy, please stop with the five-forward look. If this period does not convince you how good and valuable Adam Fox is, nothing will. New York went 0-for-4 on the power play, with the second unit looking far better than the first. In fact, with a 5-on-3 that became a 5-on-4 when the first penalty expired as the Ducks came up the ice. Artemi Panarin’s inability to defend on the rush – no criticism meant – helped lead to the goal against.

Just go with Vladislav Gavrikov or even Matthew Robertson or Scott Morrow – if he dresses – rather than five forwards. It’s not working and not keeping it, just borders on stubbornness. It’s the definition of insanity.

4) Matt Rempe, who dressed for the first time since October 23, admitted he suffered a broken thumb in the fight that sidelined him. Not just a break but a break in multiple spots. After the fight, I said how unnecessary it was. The injury more than proved that. He will not be able to fight for a while as the thumb is not healed enough to facilitate that action.

5) Mika Zibanejad: We went through the conspiracy theories yesterday. Other than maybe the Rangers doing so to force Zib to waive his NMC, which is not happening and not the goal, no additional ones have been raised. I understand the move and consistency of the message being sent, but I disagree with the timing with Anaheim in town and how much this game meant to him. In addition, while you may win the war, sitting him lost the battles as his pressure was needed offensively in general and on the man advantage. Vince Mercogliano provides additional context on the scratch in the video.

I am not calling tonight a must-win, but it kind of is. Five games in seven days, a trip to St. Louis is upcoming. Divisional game on the road against the Flyers on Saturday afternoon. Home game Sunday versus a much better Nashville squad. Tight postseason race. If they stay in, they need to win. If the plan is to punt, then….

I generally need to refresh the website a few times to get new things to populate. Not sure why it is like that, but that’s always gotten new comments/blogs to show up for me. I also go straight to the forum and do it there – seems more reliable to get to the comments and then the blogs.

I just realized my last post didn’t post either. This site might be worse than the product the Rangers are putting on the ice.

I appreciate the effort, but it’s very frustrating to be active on this site. From the constant log outs, posts not posting, blogs not showing up for days, very difficult to keep up.

When can this Drury experiment be over? My goodness he’s destroyed this organization.

After last seasons debacle, I couldnt believe Drury wasnt fired. You traded FC for Miller in the hopes he would save the organization but the organization just dragged him down. People posting Mill and Mika would be PPG players again and they arent even close, -11 in the plus/Minus. This team a .500 team and playoff bubble at best. The other teams in our division retooled and are much stronger, going to be hard for this team to compete for anything.

My biggest question is, what are they going to do with Panarin? We know Drury isnt a fan of his, Drury ripped Panarin after that ECF a few years ago, but if you dont sign him, it would look like they raised the white flag because there isnt another big FA player out there. Please I dont want to hear Mcdavid, he isnt coming here in 2 years, he wants to win a Cup, not hope to make the playoffs. So what to do with Panarin?

I say this with full transparency that I am wanting a full tear down/rebuild – any player should be on the table except Gabe. Panarin needs to be traded at the deadline no matter what – drury needs to find a way and take whatever he can get. resigning him for what he apparently wants is not worth it and will just be more of the same for this team.

Along with Gabe, I wouldnt want to trade Cuylle (although he would probably get us a pretty decent haul)… and maybe Schneider. Might keep Morrow for PP purposes.

    Quotes don’t work for me

Cuylle is tradable. He’s been bad but still has good value. I’d be ok with him staying because of age and contract.

Schneider is a 2nd pairing d at best and if any team thinks he’s more than that we need to pull the trigger asap

I dont think Schneider is untradeable, I think hes good, Its kind of impossible to strip the team down to the bare bones, so I wouldnt force a trade involving him.. as you say cause of age and contract. But if theres a team out there that offers something along the lines of what KAndre got us (a 1st and a B prospect), Id have a hard time saying no at this point.

Drury and anyone involved in player development followed by all tradable players need to go. Drury can’t survive another rebuild. He cheated on the first one and now we’re in a terrible spot. I’ll say this in his defense, Laf and kakko not working out probably is the nail in the coffin for this version of the team. I think every other GM would’ve taken those two players if they were in our spot so you can’t blame him for that. Development failed them and they’ve failed themselves. Everything else he’s done (or not done, I.e. getting a difference maker) is trash though

All of this is probably moot because the word is (and history would agree) that Dolan is not interested in a rebuild in earnest

It blows my mind that a 70 year old man that is apparently worth 2 billion dollars, can’t commit to a real rebuild because of some missed playoff revenue for a few years. Yeah let’s keep being 1 and done or miss the playoffs altogether instead of missing a few years during a rebuild and actually building a perennial winner/contender. F Dolan.

Kakko has 4 points in 15 games with Seattle this season, so I cant say that he has progressed his game.

LAF, unfortunately, has succumbed to a team with one of the worst managed and developed teams in the NHL. in 5 years, hes had 4 different head coaches and 2 different GMs. Let this sink in… since 2020 we’ve had David Quinn, Gerard Gallant, Peter Lavoilette and Mike Sullivan as head coaches. They didnt have a captain, then they did, then they traded him away 2 years later. How is any team, let alone a young player, supposed to find development and synchronicity under those conditions?
