Rangers: Panarin Sits to Await a Trade

The New York Rangers lost 5-2 to the Islanders in the front end of the two teams’ back-to-backs on Wednesday. That defeat and the game overall were by far secondary stories. Artemi Panarin was held out for roster management / trade purposes and has played his last game as a Blueshirt.

Game recap:

Rangers line up against the Islanders:

Miller – Zibanejad – Perreault
Cuylle – Trocheck – Lafrenière
Othmann – Laba – Raddysh
Brodzinski – Carrick – Rempe

Gavrikov – Schneider
Robertson – Borgen
Vaakanainen – Morrow

Martin
[Quick]

A Few Thoughts

1) The game: making this quick because honestly, given what else is ongoing, this gets pushed to the background. The Islanders dominated action, as somewhat expected, with the Blueshirts missing their best forward, defenseman and goalie. The Rangers didn’t post their first shot of the game until 12:23 had elapsed and totaled just 16 for the game.

Despite that weak output, the Rangers were only down 2-1, thanks to Mika Zibanejad’s PPG. Nearly halfway through the second. The game completely turned when the Blueshirts picked up three penalties on the same sequence. Two by Sam Carrick, the first of which was a weak call when the Islander stepped on his stick, and one by Matt Rempe, who then was basically tackled with no corresponding call. The Rangers killed out two of the penalties but couldn’t make it through the third without giving up a tally. Just 47 seconds later, the home team scored again and it was all she wrote.

2) Panarin: We knew this day was coming. However, the manner is which it went down yesterday was surprising. About an hour before game time the Rangers announced Panarin would sit for roster management / trade related purposes, essentially ending his Rangers career. Panarin practiced yesterday morning with Jonny Brodzinski staying on the ice late, so the presumption was the Bread man would play. The decision to sit Panarin makes sense, just coming as it did was the surprising part.

Panarin will go down as one of the best free agents in team history. The only one who is close or could be viewed as better was Adam Graves, who was signed as a free agent in 1991. Graves has the playoff pedigree and won a Cup, which could give him the edge. Panarin is more of a playmaker than Graves, who scored in the dirty areas. Bread has his one postseason moment, the Game 7 overtime, game winner versus the Penguins.

Where Panarin lands remains to be seen. Depending on which insider you believe, Panarin either requires or doesn’t require an extension as part of approving a trade. If he received an extension as part of a sign-and-trade, the return would be higher. Plus, he only wants to stay on the east coast or would okay trades elsewhere. Shang Peng, who is very plugged in for the Sharks, wrote early this morning that Panarin would consider San Jose, which has been a team floated as a possible match.

New rumor Panarin will go to EDM to play with McDavid without an extension being worked out

Where in the hell are you seeing this? There’s no way he’d live there for even half a season. Edmonton is in cap hell with really not many ways to get out from under it enough to even fit half of Panarins contract.

    EK is at it again

From his latest blog RE: Panarin

“They’re all-in on Ovechkin’s final Cup run.Panarin would give them another elite puck-driver to take pressure off Ovi and Kuznetsov. The Caps are willing to part with futures.”

Kuznetsov! Who hasn’t played an NHL game since 2024!

He found an article he wrote years ago, copy and pasted it.

Im ready for an underwhelming trade return.[/quote

Im hoping that its closer to what we got for Miller, rather than what we got for Kreider.

However because of how he publicly put its all out there and how he handles these things, it is definitely a concern. The real issue is that Panarin wants a contract extension, a pretty sizeable one, with whatever team he approves a trade to. However, what makes me more optimistic rather than cynical about it, the teams who are supposedly in on him… LA, SJ, WSH and DET, all have the cap space next year to do it and decent prospects to go after. WSH less so than the others and I dont think they want to split the Protas brothers, I think theyre more likely to trade McMichael.

If drury takes bad contacts for picks, retains money on trades etc, it’ll show me he’s at least somewhat serious about doing this the right way.

This won’t be a proper tear down either. Drury has already said it’s going to be a retool, which means he’s going to add veteran players with some of the picks and prospects he acquires and we’ll be having this conversation again in 2 years when hopefully he’s finally fired.

You guys are impossible to please. The jury just came back.

They’re doing a proper tear down…it just isn’t done yet. They can’t trade NMCS because that’s gets you guys up in arms too

Gorton didnt draft well, Drurys picks are still tbd. Perrault looks the part. Laba was kind of a diamond in the rough as of now. And why do you guys get so upset when he trades picks if he doesn’t draft well?? 🤣

I swear it’s like I’m dealing with children up in here 🤦

You keep saying were impossible to please… when the point thats being made is that it confirms what many have said that this team is/was not good enough to win the Chip. Again, the problem isnt that hes tearing it down now. The issue is that its happening now and not 5 years ago, or even before.

The reason we had a Goodrow contract that was so difficult to move is because Drury made it that way.
The reason we have a Zib contract that we cant move is because Drury made it that way.
The reason we have a Miller contract we cant move is because Drury made it that way. He didnt write the contract, but he didnt have to trade for him.

You cant sit here and call us children when you’re playing both sides of the coin whenever its convenient for you. The people who have been wanting a proper tear down have stuck to their guns about it for years, and this goes back to the signings of Panarin and Trouba. They never changed their opinion, win or lose.

His last draft he drafted Laf (consensus) Cuylle Schneider Berard Rempe. I’d call that a solid draft.
