Rangers Roundup: Panarin Day-To-Day

New York Rangers winger Artemi Panarin missed the second part of training camp Friday due to a lower-body injury. Before everyone panics, two facts. First, it’s September 19, plenty of time until the season starts. Second, see the first point. Coach Mike Sullivan said Panarin is day-to-day, and his sitting out was more precautionary than a concern.

Will Cuylle looks likely to open the season in the top six. If Mike Zibanejad stays at wing, this means that Brennan Othmann, if he makes the team, would skate on the third line. Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere should flank Vincent Trocheck on the second line.

The New York power play plummeted last season to 28th in the league with a 17.6 percent conversion rate due to a variety of reasons, including a reluctance (stubbornness) to change up the personnel or the system. David Quinn ran a more successful power play when he coached the Rangers and also last year in Pittsburgh, who finished sixth in the league with a 25.8 percent success rate. In addition, when he was in New York as head coach, Adam Fox won the Norris Trophy.

David Starman is a bold and really good hire. If you don’t know how good he is, go back and listen to highlights from the World Junior tournament. Starman, who breaks down the game as good as anyone out there, replaces Dave Maloney who moved from radio to TV.

Great first 2 periods. I’d say Perrault has the edge over Othmann and unfortunately Berard (although a still love this kid). Just not sure 3rd line will suit him best. Parssinen has been solid, think he’s a lock for 3C but Laba is super close and could step in mid year. Unfortunate Morrow is a right shot, think he’d make the team otherwise.

Maybe I’m a fool for saying this during game 2 of the preseason but this system seems just so much simpler and more effective than the last 2 seasons

We just haven’t seen our skill guys play and make cross ice passes at stupid times. They guys in now dump and chase and go to the net. When we have 93 and 10 in the lineup again you’ll see the efficiency go right out the door.

I think it would be a mistake by the coaching staff to overlook Berard based on his play last season. I think hes a lot like Eeli Tolvanen, small guy, plays bigger than he is and clearly in very limited time still some what productive. Based on his P/60, in an 82 game season he could have been flirting with 15 goals and well over 100 hits.

I’m rooting hard for Berard, I wish they both could make it. Othmann is becoming a problem, if they give up on him he’s going to find it one day somewhere else.

The problem is we dont have the space on the roster to wait on a guy to finally find it. Which is why, like Nils when I kept saying we should trade him, if a GM sees value, and we can recoup some value for him, we gotta do it.

Hopefully playing with Trocheck and laf gets Othmann going. Or else it may be Perreault making the team over him

Garand looked leaky. Fox and Soucy looked terrible on the 4th goal. This team needs to tighten it up defensively.

Theres also the possibility neither makes the lineup with Raddysh, possibly Sheary making the team and Berard grabbing a spot based on his solid play last year. Id love to see Othmann, Laba, Perreault play together in the AHL.

Fox looks horrendous. Want to chalk it up to preseason, fine. But he just looks like there is zero effort.
