The Detroit Red Wings are having an incredible December right now. After back to back wins over the Washington Capitals, the Wings continued to soar. Detroit came through with an overtime win over the Dallas Stars last night. The Red Wings are now 9-2-1 as they head into the holiday break.
The Stars had taken a 2-1 lead late in the second period. However, the Wings were able to find their way back. Still, Detroit was down 3-2 late in the third period against a powerful Dallas team. Dylan Larkin tied the game on a power play goal to get the team to overtime.
Larkin needed 34 seconds in the extra frame to give the Red Wings a third straight win. Goalie John Gibson has now won his past eight straight starts. Consequently, the team only has two regulation losses in the month of December. Thus, 2025 is ending on a very different note than the previous season.
Todd McLellan’s first year behind the bench
In 2024, the Red Wings parted ways with head coach Derek LaLonde during the holiday break. Coach Todd McLellan was brought in to try and right the ship. The team responded with an incredible stretch of wins and a shift in momentum. However, after a 4 Nations break, things fell apart and the team missed the playoffs.
This season, Detroit heads into the break at the top of the Atlantic Division. Unfortunately, only 7 points separate the top 7 teams currently. The Red Wings need to keep winning, and McLellan seems to have the group on the right path. After his first year, the head coach seems to have built the foundation for the team to take the next step in the rebuild.
Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond
Lucas Raymond has been strong for the team, with 41 points in 36 games played. Raymond collected three assists in the win, including one on the overtime winner. Consequently, Larkin and Raymond have a combined 77 points after 38 games this season. The duo may finally have solidified a left with the arrival of Emmitt Finnie. Finnie added a goal on the night, giving the trio a combined six points on the night.
Moritz Seider continued his impressive scoring pace, grabbing two assists. Consequently, Seider has acquired 23 points in his past 22 games played. Furthermore, in his fifth NHL season, Moritz Seider has yet to miss a game with four straight 82 game seasons. Along with his scoring, Seider is currently posting a career high +13.
Fortunately, the team will get a much needed three days off before returning to action. Detroit will finish the year with three games in the final five days of the year. However, the team will need to be sharp to have a strong finish. Still, the first half of the year has shown a lot of promise as the team looks to break their post season drought.

The Wings have given their fans a wonderful Christmas present! Never thought this team would be doing this well this season. What a great surprise!
Merry Christmas to all and especially to you, Jeremy, and yours!
