The Detroit Red Wings are in trouble. However, they showed some resilience on Saturday. The Boston Bruins beat Detroit 3-2 in a game that went to a shootout. Consequently, Detroit’s losing streak is now up to four games. Yet, the Red Wings showed signs of live that may be encouraging.
After two humiliating losses, the Wings needed to show some grit in Boston. Even as the Bruins were imposing their will, the Red Wings continued to fight back. Thus, Detroit found a way to get the game to overtime and get a much needed point.
Even so, the team badly needs to end this losing streak. Detroit now sits outside of the playoff bubble, however just a single point separates multiple teams. This year, more than any, feels like a critical point in the rebuild and for GM Steve Yzerman.
Red Wings avoid multiple injury scares
Moritz Seider, in an effort to spark the team, found himself on the losing end of a fight. At first, it looked like Seider may have been injured and unable to return. However, the Red Wings’ iron man made his way back into the game. Seider’s loss would be significant, and fortunately it looks like he was ok.
Travis Hamonic, similarly, has taken some tough bumps in the past couple of games. The Red Wings’ defense is already thin, therefore any injuries could make a bad situation worse. Simon Edvinsson also recently missed some games due to illness. Edvinsson’s absence left a gap in minutes that had to be taken on by committee.
Red Wings face Bruins again
Fortunately, the Red Wings won’t have to wait long for a rematch against Boston. The Bruins come to town on Tuesday, and Detroit needs to be ready. The current slide has shifted the standings, and consequently Detroit is on the outside looking in.
It remains to be seen if Detroit can find an upgrade for the current roster. Even so, internal temperatures will be piqued after last yesterday’s gritty contest. The Red Wings need to come out strong and end the losing streak before things get even more out of hand.
