Goal Scoring isn’t always enough

The Red Wings prospects were described as fast and highly skilled by the Dallas broadcast team. Those attributes led to a 6-2 win over Dallas on Saturday night. Unfortunately, Sunday evening saw a very different result. The team was able to score five goals, but gave up six to the Stars prospects.

The Stars were able to rally for four goals in the third period, erasing Detroit’s 4-2 lead. The Stars physical engagement and tenacity were a big part of that turn around. While the final result was disappointing, there was a lot to like from the Detroit prospects.

Nate Danielson and Shai Buium look ready for Red Wings

There were several standout performances from the Detroit prospects. Amadeus Lombardi looks to be the most tenacious offensive presence in the system. Emmitt Finnie looks like a potential 7th round steal. However, the performances of Nate Danielson and Shai Buium stood out above the rest.

Danielson’s stick work is relentless in all three zones. He can protect the puck, effortlessly take it from an opponent, and make plays out of nothing. Buium also looks comfortable over the entire ice surface. His offensive prowess combined with strength and speed could fill a major void on Detroit’s blue line. These two players will be competing for a spot in the Motor City.

A new era of skilled players is here

There is a clear organizational need to improve defensive structure and execution. A former NHL forward once told me, “you can teach defense, you can’t teach scoring”. If that is the case, then Detroit has a lot to look forward to. The skill displayed in Texas saw 11 goals scored in two games.

Players like Lombardi were able to create offense with their skating and puck management. Axel Sandin-Pellikka moves the puck effortlessly, and his shot selection is incredible. These young players are creating offense at an incredible level, and that’s looks to be the hallmark of the rebuild. The organization now needs to address goals against and team defense. Once they accomplish that, there are better days ahead in Detroit.

  1. Hey Jeremy, nice write-up and I appreciate your take!

I was able to attend the game last night at the Comerica Center since I only live about 30 minutes from there. My review skills aren’t the best and it has been years since I watched a live game but here is my take that I posted last night. Sounds like we are very close on opinions!

“Unfortunately the Wings fell 6-5 tonight but it was awesome seeing live hockey since it has been more than a few years for me. I thought the Stars had more jump in the third for sure and the score sheet should show that.

Stand-outs for me tonight for overall play were Lombardie, Danielson, Buium, and to a lessor degree Kilfoil (has energy/drive but did not have a complete game like the others). Enjoyed watching the prospects (obviously my review skills are lacking) and there appears to be some talent still maturing before they are ready to be full time members of the big club.”

    1. Thanks for the follow up!!! I absolutely agree on the standouts. Lombardi is THE most aggressive forechecker in the system. The only thing that I think puts Danielson in line ahead of him is the 200 ft game. ND just gets it in every zone. But, Lombardi could well turn an audition into a permanent job if he can stay healthy. Just wait for that opportunity. Shai Buium pushed himself into 2nd in scoring with GR last year. His 2 goals this weekend showed off his skating and composure. He was making plays in every zone as well. We’ll see how he does in camp, but i penciled him in as the top lefty in GR now. ASP and MBN both had some incredible moments. MBN’s goal in game 1 was a play with Doucet that he set up and executed perfectly. ASP is just magic with the puck in the O zone. So much to like right now.

I would also add I don’t believe goalie Pradel had a very good night.

    1. Depending on how many articles we have in queue awaiting editing, sometimes it takes a while until we have a chance to look over and and approve blog comments.

Again, while people are by all means invited to use the blog comment mechanism, the Fan Forum menu up to is recommended for conducting daily conversations and discussing blogs. Click here: https://hockeyhotstove.com/forums/forum/detroit-red-wings/

      1. No problem Bill, being a new member following Jeremy over from his prior blogging area I didn’t realize all posts had to be moderated. Especially when my very first post did (and never was posted) but the next two posts last night went straight through.

Curious for future reference on the forum discussions, how long does it take his blog to post there? The blog we are commenting on here does not show up in the forum to comment on currently?

        1. Blogs can be posted to the forum — Mike Augello does those from his control panel. I added today’s blog manually to the forum, with a link as the first post in the thread.

The advantage of Forum posts is that they post instantly.

The reason who we have moderation of blog comments is to filter out spam (rife on other Word Press sites). On the forums, spam is minimal (slips through occasionally) so we set that up for instant posting.

  3. Trying from the phone as that posted last night, sorry if 3 posts show up.
