For the Detroit Red Wings, young players have made making presence known right away.. The Red and White game saw Emmitt Finnie defying expectations for the upcoming season. The pre season opener against Chicago saw Finnie stand out, additionally raising his stock in the process.

Red Wings prospects Emmitt Finne: taking over the ice

Finnie had impressed last year, even so he was not the top candidate for a rookie break through. Furthermore the former 7th round pick continues to force his way into the conversation. His work ethic, speed and skill set are, consequently, causing a lot of buzz.

Detroit’s opening goal saw Finnie make a backward pass between his skates and onto Carter Mazur’s stick. Finnie would later score the game winner by quickly sending  a rebound toward the net. Defensive plays by the young winger help Detroit hold on for a hard fought win. Emmitt Finnie was the most visible player across all 200 feet of the ice.

Finnie’s play was complemented by Mazur and Danielson, and that line accounted for all three goals. Mazur was competitive all over the ice as well. Nate Danielson’s tip in goal was well executed, and there were flashes of his 200 ft game as well.  Still, Finnie continues to turn heads and prompt media questions.

Veterans J.T. Compher and Andrew Copp , conversely, both seem to have been put on notice. Compher struggled in tonight’s contest, consequently missing a critical block on a goal against. Coach Todd McLellan has made no secret that the best player is going to get the job this season. Indeed, Emmitt Finnie seems to be a prime candidate to take one of those spots.

  1. Finnie has really been looking good so far. He has really wowed me. The first game against Dallas, he was all over the ice in the thick of it too.
The Dallas game was the real first time I have been able to watch the young guys play and I saw a lot of positives. I like what I see. I really like the energy. They are a fun watch.
I also was pretty happy with Berggy. I noticed him quite a bit last night. I like the effort he put in. What do you think? I’m rooting for the guy for some reason. Come on JB, show us what you can do!
I imagine SY has to be pretty happy with what he sees.

    1. Finnie continues to shock me. In 4 games, he’s managed to stand out and make something happen. Really curious where he ends up when the season gets here.

For JB, absolutely routing for him. He was 6th on the team in goals playing 12:59 per night last year (12 goals). Copp had an injury shortened year, but JB still outscored Copp, Compher, Tarasenko, and Rasmussen. He’s going hard to the net and trying to create offense. Hoping he earns some better minutes and makes it work.
