The Detroit Red Wings head coach called on players like Ben Chiarot to contribute more offensively. Accordingly, Chiarot and Mo Seider stepped up to spark a comeback late in Saturday’s game. Both players had a goal and an assist in the win over Columbus.
After the loss to the Islanders, the Red Wings needed to bounce back quickly. Additionally, Detroit needed to see players outside of the top line in the goal column. Both of those things happened, yet without Cam Talbot’s performance things could have gotten worse.
Talbot’s timely saves turned the Tides
Moritz Seider’s game tying goal very nearly did not happen. Moments before, Cam Talbot had to stop a 1 on 0 short handed breakaway. Without that stop, Detroit is down four to two and the game is very likely out of reach. Therefore, Talbot’s big moment was the spark that led to a much needed win.
Talbot posted a .912 save percentage, stopping 31 of 34 shots with several game changing moments. Many thought Talbot would be a 1B option this year, however he looks to have secured the top spot with his play. Meanwhile, John Gibsonseems to struggle as he continues to adapt to the Detroit system.
The Red Wings face a tough week ahead
Over the next seven days, the Red Wings will play four games ending in a back to back. In that stretch, only one team (Nashville) is currently outside of the playoff bubble. Somehow, the Red Wings need to find a way to win at least two of those games.
There will be off nights, therefore the team will be looking for stability in net. Talbot and Gibson will be called on to give the team a shot against some formidable opponents. However, the entire team needs to be engaged for the entire 60 minutes. The stretch up until the holiday break could go far to determine if the Red Wings can finally return to the post season.
