The 2025-2026 National Hockey League season is simply a make or break campaign for the Buffalo Sabres. With the playoff drought having reached 14 consecutive years, Buffalo must return to the postseason next spring.
The contract of general manager Kevyn Adams expires at the end of the 25-26 season. He will not be offered a new contract should the streak of futility reach fifteen.
With the Sabres in win now mode, they will have to be quick out of the gate to start this crucial season.
S even of the team’s twelve games in October are on home ice.Western New York is a community that loves the Sabres and NHL hockey.
The fan base just wants a competitive team, something to cheer about and to get behind. Many of the most ardent supporters have reached a “Show Me” breaking point. A good start in October is essential, not only to bank points but to engage the fans.
Of the seven home contests in the first month season, four are against division opponents. Key amongst those early matchups on home ice are games against Ottawa and Detroit. The Senators and Red Wings are teams the Sabres will need to defeat to remain in the Eastern Conference playoff chase.
The Sabres must guard against a slow start. Digging themselves an early hole in the standings would be disastrous.
However, the early season slate is also an outstanding opportunity. A strong start, especially at home, would be something to build on and would fill the seats.
The home date heavy slate continues in November with eight of fourteen matchups in Buffalo.
If this edition of the Sabres can make Key Bank Center a difficult building for opposing teams to come into, then they will find themselves in the postseason conversation heading into December.
The outcome of the early season home contests will go a long way in determining how this season will play out.
The importance of the early games will weigh heavily for an organization that must reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs come late April.
