Star Gazing: Gulutzan Wins Preseason Return

In the first game of his second stint as Dallas Stars, Glen Gulutzan earned a victory. The Stars opened the 2025-26 preseason with a 2-1 (1-0) shootout win over the St. Louis Blues at American Airline Center on Saturday evening.

As typical early in the preseason, the teams dressed just a smattering of NHL lineup regulars. Meanwhile, the Stars enjoyed a 34-15 shot advantage through 65 minutes. However, the clubs mustered just one apiece.

Justin Carboneau notched a power play goal for the Blues in the opening minute of the second period. Subsequently, Mavrik Bourque knotted the score at 14:33 of the second period. The game stayed deadlocked the rest of regulation and overtime. In the ensuing skills competition, Sam Steel scored in the bottom of the first round for the only successful attempt by either side.

The match featured an early-game “middleweight” scrap between Justin Hryckowian and Nathan Walker. Remi Poirier (10 saves on 11 shots) played the game’s first two periods in net for the Stars. Antoine Bibeau played the third period, OT, and shootout. He stopped four shots over the final 25 minutes before going 3-for-3 in the shootout.

The Stars return to action on Tuesday. Gulutzan and his team host the Minnesota Wild (7:00 p.m. CDT).
