The Latest on Panarin Trade Watch

The New York Rangers have one game left prior to the Olympic break, on Thursday against Carolina. New York is limping into the stoppage on a three-game losing streak, continuing what has been a brutal season. This stretch mirrors how long Artemi Panarin has sat as New York has scratched the Bread Man to avoid injury as they attempt to trade him.

In the prior sentence, the key word is “attempt.” Panarin holds all the cards, as he possesses a no-movement clause and therefore, can elect not to go where GM Chris Drury finds a partner. One prominent unconfirmed rumor going around X is that Drury had a deal worked out with Seattle, with the Rangers getting Shane Wright and picks. We won’t debate if Wright is a worthwhile acquisition, since a sof now, Panarin has no desire to go to Seattle, thereby scuttling the proposed trade.

If you need a reminder, the trade freeze goes into effecton Wednesday, February 4 at 3 pm. That means the clock is ticking. If no deal is reached, then nothing can be done until after 11:59 pm, February 22. Deals can be discussed, but nothing consummated until after that date. Panarin is set to miss his fourth game on Thursday, and if not dealt, he will be in limbo for another 18 days, meaning nearly a month would have passed from when he was shut down.

Negotiations in this case are complex. A no-movement clause is the backdrop to any discussions since Panarin will dictate where he wants to go. Add in Panarin’s desire for an extension, rumored to be in the $50 mil range, impacting those who might have interest, along with the possibility/probability, New York retains salary, and you have a confluence of factors. All that said, Drury pulling the plug on any extension publicly hamstrung any possible leverage the GM and team might have had. If you are going to send out the letter and make that comment, then a deal should either be in place or on the verge of completion.

Elliotte Friedman was on NHL Tonight discussing Barry Trotz’s decision to step down as Nashville GM. As part of that piece, Freidman provided the latest on Panarin. His top choice is Florida. Given Florida’s lack of a first round pick or prospect that thrills me, unless Anton Lundell is part of that trade, color me not interested. But if Panarin forces his way to the Panthers, Drury may end up taking a lower return than he should. Friedman hints at Washington and Los Angeles being the front-runners. I would prefer to see Panarin on the other coast so he doesn’t repeatedly torture the Blueshirts. Could Liam Greentree, Alex Laferriere and a first rounder be the return? What about Andrew Cristall, Ethan Frank and a pick as the package?

The clock is ticking. Pressure is on Drury. A move needs to be made shortly.

Do we think Drury was like “nah I’m not gonna ask for a 1st?” Or do we think LA said “take it or leave it. We will just sign him in the offseason”. Like come on guys. I’m the number 1 drury hater. He sucks shit. I just don’t know what you think he should have done differently outside of waiting til the real trade deadline, which could backfire too

I will judge him by Trocheck, who we cannot afford to keep due to how much he could fetch us in a trade. He’s got term and only a modified NTC

I will judge him by Schneider, who apparently has trade value for some reason. You trade him if you can get anything good

If we get to the seasons end and no other major roster players have been moved it’s an abject failure

I do like Greentree. He’s a big physical kid that I think will be a good NHL player

No issues at all with Greentree. Hes been a target of mine going back to when we were looking to trade KAndre. Its the kicker thats a kick in the nuts. if it was a conditional 2nd, that could be a 1st, I would have been a bit less annoyed.

Drury gets raked over the coals.

    Talk about underwhelming!!!

Unfortunately, because of the NMC, he got bent over. Not much you can do in the situation. Gorton signed him to a fully locked up NMC for the entirety of the contract. It is what it is.

After watching this crap show known as the New York Rangers ..I can’t take it anymore I’ve followed Jan from HB for years and it took until now for me to join the fray.. Been a Rangers fan for 45 plus years and watching this beloved team who has kicked me in the teeth on several occasions now has a clown GM making awful decision after decision. Paging Mr Buchnevich, JT Miller, trading Trouba for Vakkainen.. Kakko for Parssinen ( both guys Drury loved and have been hoping to acquire for years)But hey at least he told Ranger fans and subsequently the rest of the NHL in a letter to basically obsolve him of his misgivings. Forgetting he’s the architect of this Hindenburg known as the last 2 NYR seasons. You know who doesn’t send out letters? Winning organizations! How the hell can he be justified in being a GM! You know why he sent out a letter? Because finally the fans had enough of this crap product and started to boo him at MSG. well Mr Sensitive couldn’t stand that..does he face the media and talk in front of the camera ? Nope..he hides behind a carefully worded ( cough repeated letter) My god Drury is infuriating! He has never won a trade..he gives up more when he has all the leverage ie..JT.. I get Panarin having leverage but why did he have to trade him today? Not sure why the Kings and Panarin were a perfect match either? But if you are Drury you must come away with a first rd pick! Drury is the most incompetent GM ever! I also think it’s odd that reports say Washington had a huge offer for him? Then you hear the return and I’m sick to my stomach! I am in shock to be honest that this all the return. Really why wouldn’t Panarin want to go to the Caps or Lightning over the Kings? I thought he only wanted an East Coast team with legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations uhh last I looked the Kings do not fit the description? All I know is Drury has to be fired..The culprit who took this franchise on the cusp of the Stanley Cup Final to driving them into the ground and the sad state this team has become ( sorry tire fire). If you thought this team couldn’t score before? Wait till u watch them now without Bread driving the play.. The greatest free agent in Ranger history and one of their most prolific scorers now suiting up for the Kings ..I have no answers as to what this team can do to right this ship.. but I know the Captain of the Titanic ( our GM is NOT the answer! Btw why the hell didn’t we resign him 2 yr 11m doesn’t seem that out of touch when u think about the contracts we are giving Parssinen and Borgen ( 17 games as a Ranger )multi year deals.. What a dark day to be a Ranger fan.. followed by many unwatchable seasons. Don’t buy anymore tickets, merch or watch anymore maybe then Dolan will take notice?

We also apparently retained 50%… makes it even worse, despite the constraints lol

I didn’t see that anywhere. Has it just come out???

Yea, its up on the finalized trade posts.
