Trevor Lewis joined the Utah Mammoth this week. He will be the team’s Video Scout and an Ambassador to Youth and Amateur Hockey.

Joining the Mammoth is a homecoming for the 39-year-old Lewis, who is from Salt Lake City, Utah. The veteran forward played 17 seasons in the NHL and won two Stanley Cups as a member of the Los Angeles Kings.

He is one of a few Utah-born players who have played in the NHL. His 237 career points put him second all-time among Utah-born players. Former Washington Capitals forward Steve Konowalchuk (396 points) is the Utah-born player with the most points in NHL history.

Lewis and His NHL Career

Lewis was selected 17th overall by the Kings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. After a season with the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and some time spent with Los Angeles’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Manchester Monarchs, Lewis made his NHL debut during the 2008-09 season, playing six games for the Kings.

Lewis became a regular with Los Angeles during the 2010-11 season, when he registered three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 72 games. He went on to become a fixture in the Kings’ bottom six over the next decade, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He epitomized the gritty, hard-nosed principles of the team during that era.

After leaving the Kings as a free agent following the 2019-2020 season, Lewis played one season with the Winnipeg Jets and two with the Calgary Flames. He then returned to Los Angeles for the final two seasons of his career.

A Mammoth Ambassador in Utah

With the Mammoth now relocated to Utah, and a hometown guy like Lewis joining as an ambassador, the hope is for more NHLers to come out of the Beehive State in future generations. Much like the Arizona (Phoenix) Coyotes’ presence helped produce NHLers from Arizona, such as Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
