The Utah Mammoth stomped all over the Anaheim Ducks 7-0 on Wednesday. Lawson Crouse and Dylan Guenther scored goals in the first 11 minutes. The victory ends a four-game losing streak. JJ Peterka registered two goals and two assists for the Mammoth. Clayton Keller contributed a goal and two assists, while Guenther and Ian Cole each had a goal and an assist. Liam O’Brien also scored in the Mammoth victory.
Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves for Utah. He earned his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career. Ducks goaltender Ville Husso allowed four goals on 21 shots in two periods, while Vyacheslav Buteyets allowed three goals on 13 shots in the third period. This was Buteyets’ NHL debut. The Mammoth took advantage of the fact that both Anaheim goalies, Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek, are out due to injuries.
Utah Mammoth Scored First and Often
Crouse opened the scoring at 5:59 into the game on a backhand shot from his knees. Guenther made it 2-0 at 10:30 of the first period when he slid the puck between Husso’s legs. Cole registered his goal at 5:43 of the second period with a blast from the left circle. Anaheim’s Mason McTavish thought he scored for the Ducks in the second period, but the goal was taken away. Video replay ruled that the Ducks were offside.
The Mammoth increased their lead to 4-0 at 14:34 of the second period when Peterka scored from a tough angle off a cross-ice pass from Nick Schmaltz. O’Brien made it 5-0 in the third period with a deflection off the skate of Ducks defenseman Drew Helleson. Peterka scored his second of the game on a power play to make it 6-0. Keller finished things off with a goal in the final 10 minutes. Hopefully, Utah will find the win column again in Vancouver Friday night.
