When the Penguins take the ice again tonight they are going to do so with a different look.  There have been some roster moves since their 2-1 overtime loss to the Kraken on Saturday.

NHL debut for Tristan Broz

Tristan Broz will be making his NHL debut tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.  Broz had a good showing in both the rookie camp and training camp.  There were arguments to be had about keeping him up on the NHL roster at the beginning of the year.  Coach Muse and Kyle Dubas felt it would be better if he went back down and played bigger minutes.  He did so and now he’s earned a promotion to begin his NHL career.

Broz has 8 goals and 13 points in his 18 AHL games this year.  To make room for Broz the team has sent Sam Poulin back down to the AHL.

Tristan Jarry returns

The Penguins have another healthy goalie option.  Tristan Jarry is back from his injury and will be starting tonight for the Penguins.

He has exceeded the expectations that have preceded him for this season.  He has had a strong start to 2025-26.  In seven games he has a .911 save percentage.  Among goaltenders with 300 5v5 minutes played Jarry is seventh overall with a .868 high-danger save percentage.  He’s been making the difficult saves when the team has needed him to.  A very nice change of pace from recent years.  We’ll see if he can pick back up where he left off.

This likely means Sergei Murashov will be heading back to Wilkes Barre.  There’s no sense in keeping him up if both Jarry and Silovs are going to resume the rotation they utlized before Jarry’s injury.  Murashov showed he belonged in his short stint putting up a .913 save percentage in his four games (three starts).

Rookie swap

It is always disappointing news, but Ben Kindel will not be playing today.  It is a pre-planned part of his development process.  Ville Koivunen will be taking his place

Koivunen continues to look for some traction this season.  He’s been underwhelming given his talent and how he looked during the games he received at the end of last season.  I’m hoping things start to click because he is somebody who’s skillset can really help this team out.

Brunicke to get some game action

Harrison Brunicke is going to finally play in the league that he probably should be playing in to begin with.  As part of a loophole in the CBA Brunicke is eligible for a conditioning assignment in the AHL despite the CHL transfer agreement.  Because Brunicke has been a scratch for the number of consecutive games he has, he is afforded a one-time conditioning stint

I think this is going to be very good for him.  One, he gets to actually play in games again.  Two, I think developmentally this is probably the place where he can grow the most.  It is only short term, but after grinding it out in the NHL he should be able to play well at the AHL level and find some success.  This will be good for his confidence.

I suspect that after this stint has run its course the team will buy him more time until they loan him to Hockey Canada for the World Juniors.

Pittsburgh has lost seven of their last nine games.  If they want to avoid blowing their impressive start to the season they are going to have to get it going, starting tonight.
