The Edmonton Oilers played their third game of a five-game homestand on Saturday night. They scored early and often, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 6-2. This explosion of offense came two days after the Oilers slayed the Seattle Kraken 9-4. I think it’s safe to say that the Oilers we’re used to seeing are officially back.
Edmonton immediately picked up where they left off. It only took them three minutes to get on the board. Zach Hyman took a hit at the blue line, but still managed to get the puck over to Connor McDavid. His shot was stopped, but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was on the doorstep to bang in the rebound.
It only took 67 seconds to get their second goal of the game. Leon Draisaitl registered his team-leading 17th goal of the season by going backhand on a breakaway. The breakaway was the result of a nice pass by Evan Bouchard. Matthew Savoie ended up with the game-winning goal when he scored about seven and a half minutes into the first period. The play started when Draisaitl found Vasily Podkolzin in the slot. He then passed it over to Mattias Ekholm, who shot the puck on net. Like the first goal, the initial shot was stopped, but an Oilers player was there for the rebound.
Oilers Scoring at Will
The Oilers made it a 4-0 game on a power play with six and a half minutes left in the first period. Bouchard blasted the puck past the Jets’ goaltender for his fifth of the season. The second period saw the Oilers score their fifth goal three minutes into the period. Mattias Janmark found Curtis Lazar all alone in the slot, and Lazar scored his second of the season.
Stuart Skinner’s shutout bid was ruined in the third, with the Jets scoring twice. However, Edmonton got their sixth goal of the game from David Tomášek with a pass from Trent Frederic. Tomášek has three goals now in his first NHL season. The Oilers are playing their best hockey of the season right now. They will look to keep the win streak going on Tuesday night when they host the Buffalo Sabres.
