Red Wings Strong In Back-To Back Sweep

The Detroit Red Wings are facing an incredibly difficult schedule. However, the team continues to surprise fans during the month of December. Detroit was able to win both games of a back to back against the Washington Capitals. Consequently, the team is now 8-2-1 through 11 games in the final month of 2025.

The Red Wings had a slow start after their 5-2 win in the first game against Washington.  However, Cam Talbot kept the team in the game, only surrendering one goal in the first frame. Detroit was outshot 15-4, yet they were still very much in the game thanks to Talbot. The Red Wings had to be better in the second period, and they responded well.

Lucas Raymond and John Leonard both scored in the middle frame, thereby giving Detroit a 2-1 lead. However, Washington pushed hard in the final period, tying the game up at 2 apiece. The Red Wings needed someone to put this game away, and Moritz Seider answered the bell.

Moritz Seider is breaking out

Seider secured the overtime win, scoring with just 24 seconds left in the extra frame. This marked his 25th point on the season, with 21 points his past 21 games. Accordingly, Detroit’s top defenseman is starting to get the attention as a possible candidate for the Norris Trophy this season.

Moritz Seider is now on pace to eclipse his career high in points (50) and goals scored (9). Detroit’s first round picks from 2019 has also been an iron man for the club. Seider has not yet missed a game in his career, with four full 82 game seasons behind him.  Additionally, for the past two seasons, Seider has averaged more than 25 minutes a night.

Cam Talbot breaks his losing streak

In addition to the win, the Red Wings saw Cam Talbot break a tough losing steak. Talbot had been winless in his past six starts for the team. However, coach Todd McLellan did not waiver in his support for the veteran goalie. Talbot stopped 31 of 33 shots to help Detroit secure the win.

The success of this back to back is significant for many reasons. The Red Wings continue to hold onto a top spot in the Atlantic division. However, teams below them have games in hand and a couple losses could shift Detroit from first into a wild card spot. The division is still incredibly tight heading as the league approaches the holiday break.

The Red Wings are about to play the Dallas Stars and the Carolina Hurricanes. Both teams are expected to make deep runs in the post season this year. Accordingly, both teams are near the top of the standings right now. Grabbing four points gives Detroit some, however not much, cushion heading into these next games. Still, the team needs to find a way to avoid any type of lengthy losing streak.

Seider is now in Norris trophy territory. Anybody who disputes that is insane. Wings sitting in a good spot heading into the XMAS break. May be time to send Kasper down to GR to get his game back on track. Disappointing.. but probably necessary. Appleton is back from injury to take his place for now. Love how Leonard has stepped in seamlessly and been so effective. He has all the tools and intagibles… now he has to be consistent and keep putting up points to say in Detroit. Good to see Hamonic sitting on the bench. Yzerman needs to pick up the phone call the Columbus GM about Zach Werensky’s availability. He has ties to Michigan (U of M) and playing with a couple current Red Wings… He would be a legit top 4 defenseman and make Detroit instantly better.

And how about those Griffins ??!! Simply awesome. Never seen a team this effective in all my years living in GR. Talk about a well-oiled machine.

I thought last year was Kaspers final year of being waiver exempt. Am I wrong? If they tried to send him down he would definitely get claimed.

Man I would love to see Werenski in red and white. I laugh thinking about the time when Larkin bought tickets for Zach’s parents to come to the game and then they ended up dropping the gloves with each other.

I totally agree with you about Hamonic. The best place for him is in the press box. He can be a depth defenseman if multiple injuries occur. I would even pull a couple guys up from GR before playing him anymore.

I don’t see Yzerman giving up the assets necessary to obtain Werenski, but I do believe he’ll make a trade relatively soon for a solid top 4 LD. A big physical stay at home type with decent puck skills to pair with ASP would be ideal. All the D-men currently in the pipeline project as bottom pairing types at the NHL level.

You may be right about Kasper. He’s probably no longer waiver-exempt.

Yzerman may not give up the assets if the price is too steep… but it’s worth making an inquiry to find out. If Columbus wants to “retool” or start a new rebuild he is their most valuable piece. He’s not worth the same haul that Vancouver got for Hughes. The price would be less. I know Werenski is pretty unhappy right now with his team and he’s already called them out publicly. If Werenski is not available or the price is too high… I think as you mentioned Yzerman will be looking to shore up our top 4 defensemen. Problem is those guys aren’t cheap… and not many available. It’s Yzerman’s top priority right now to fix the defense. The rumor I read somewhere is that Vancouver probaby wanted Edvinsson… so Yzerman backed our of the deal for Hughes. Which was the right call IMO. Makes no sense to get Hughes if it leaves too many holes to fill on our roster. Yzerman wouuld have been dumb to give up the equivalent of what Minnesota gave up for him.

    Kasper is waiver exempt.

Good to see this site come back to life!

Wings beat the Stars in OT and appear to have the resilient nature to compete for more prominence in the league! I hope they find the consistency to keep up this effort!!!!
