Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres are both making an impact in the early stages of the 2026 Winter Olympic hockey tournament in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Thompson and Dahlin have stood out in their first appearances representing their respective countries. Dahlin and Team Sweden began group B play on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory over Team Italy. Although the game was a tightly contested matchup through two periods. The heavily favored Swedish squad pulled away in the third period enroute to a 5-2 victory.
Dahlin logged 19:52 in time on ice for the game and contributed three assists, a mark that equals a Swedish Olympic record. In the Swedes 4-1 loss to Finland, Dahlin had the only goal.
Thompson scored a key power-play marker in period two of the win by Team USA against Latvia on Thursday as the Americans opened play in group C.
The skill level of Team Sweden and Team USA was on display as both teams were able to pull away in the later stages of each game.
Dahlin and Thompson are continuing the strong play that has the Sabres sitting in a wildcard playoff position with just twenty-five regular season games remaining in the 25-26 schedule.
While the top teams in the tournament have yet to be truly tested.
The intensity of the competition will continue to ramp up as the tournament progresses.
Favorites, Canada, USA, and Sweden will have to be at their best in this short slate of games.
Next up for team Sweden is a Friday matchup against Finland, while team USA will face off against Denmark on Saturday.
