The Columbus Blue Jackets added scoring depth ahead of the trade deadline, acquiring forward Conor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a second-round selection in 2028.
Garland, 29, recorded 26 points (7 goals, 19 assists) in 50 games this season with Vancouver and brings energy, puck-pursuit and offensive creativity to the Blue Jackets’ lineup.
Columbus general manager Don Waddell praised the acquisition, describing Garland as a versatile forward who plays a reliable two-way game and adds character and competitiveness to the team.
Originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, Garland has developed into a steady NHL contributor with 317 career points (129 goals, 188 assists) in 535 games.
Columbus Heating Up in the Playoff Race
The timing of the move is important for Columbus, which is currently pushing hard for a postseason spot in the Eastern Conference.
After a 4–2 win over the Florida Panthers, the Blue Jackets improved to 32-21-8 through 61 games this season.
Columbus is still just outside the playoff picture despite its strong recent run. The Blue Jackets currently sit one point behind the Boston Bruins for the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.
They are also three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins and three points behind the New York Islanders in the race for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Columbus has played the same number of games as Pittsburgh, while the Islanders hold two games in hand, making the race even tighter as the regular season heads toward the final stretch. However, momentum is clearly on Columbus’ side.
The Blue Jackets have gone 8-1-1 in their last ten games, one of the best runs in the NHL over that stretch.
Coaching Change Sparks Turnaround
Part of Columbus’ turnaround can be linked to the arrival of veteran head coach Rick Bowness earlier this season.
When Bowness took over behind the bench, the Blue Jackets were struggling near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Since then, the team has shown improved defensive structure and consistency, helping them climb back into the playoff race.
Aggressive Moves to Support the Playoff Push
Columbus has also been active in strengthening its roster.
The Blue Jackets previously acquired forward Mason Marchment earlier in the season, adding size and offensive presence to the lineup.
Now, with Garland joining the group, Columbus hopes the added depth will help sustain its late-season surge.
Last season, the Blue Jackets narrowly missed the playoffs by just one point, a result that still lingers inside the organization. This year, management appears determined not to let that happen again.
Vancouver Looking Toward the Future
Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks continue a difficult season. The club currently sits at the bottom of the NHL standings, making the move part of a longer-term strategy to collect future assets and reshape the roster.
For Columbus, however, the message is clear.
The Blue Jackets believe they are capable of making the playoffs — and with the team surging at the right time, the addition of Garland could become an important piece in their push toward the postseason.
