The Buffalo Sabres had a wild and wonderful ride during the 2025-26 season. After a disastrous start, the Sabres were spectacular the rest of the way. Buffalo, in fact, was the best team in the National Hockey League over the second half of the regular season.
After a 14-year absence from the playoffs, the Sabres won their first-round series. That was another huge step in the right direction.
Now the question is what comes next. The expectations will be much higher. What does the next step look like for this organization?
The Sabres core group
The future looks bright. The roster nucleus is legitimately strong. The emergence of young talents Zach Benson and Konsta Helenius plus the continued growth of team captain Rasmus Dahlin and top scorer Tage Thompson have set up the Sabres for continued success.
However, the sting of being eliminated from the playoff field remains fresh. It took a lot just to reach this stage. The Sabres were achingly close to a trip to the Eastern Conference Final. However, as Buffalo knows all too well, the path upward is not always a straight line. Falling one goal short in Game Seven of the Montreal series is a will be a reminder of the work that remains ahead for the organization.
So, too, is the very slim margin of the NHL standings. It doesn’t take much of a stumble to fall out of playoff contention. It also doesn’t take more than subtle adjustments to go from a bubble team to one with a chance to go deep in the spring.
The 2026 offseason is crucial for the Sabres. Going forward there will be significant challenges for the group heading into next fall.
“The point is about moving on now,”, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said.
“We had a good season, we had a good playoff. It hurts because I felt we were the better team. We should still be playing. We didn’t capitalize on a lot of opportunities in a game seven to put the game in our favor. When you look at where we came from to get to where we got. We got to a game seven that you lose out in. To get to that point was really hard.
Fierce competiton
The Atlantic Division will continue to boast a large number of teams capable of finishing in the number one spot. A Sabres Division Championship repeat will be a very difficult task to attain. There will undoubtedly be roster changes as free agency and a contending team managing cap constraints are ahead.
Above all, this young talented team will have to be ready to hit the ground running come October.
“Now the understanding of how hard it’s gonna be to make sure we start the year the right way, “ confirmed Ruff.
“There’s gonna be teams that walk into this building not taking us for granted. We have the respect of a good team and now we’ve gotta be ready from day one to win hockey games when we open up next year.”
