Flyers Daily: Offseason has arrived

With the respective conclusions of the IIHF World Championship and the Memorial Cup, all players in the Flyers’ system (NHL on down) have reached the offseason. On this week’s Monday with Meltzer edition of Flyers’ Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I tackle a potpourri of topics.

We start with the possibility of John Carlson being a Flyers blue line target and the fallout of that. Thereafter, we parse other possible scenarios to upgrade the roster. Subsequently, we look at the Stanley Cup Final, mistakes players (more accurately, their agents) made around the league by signing extensions too soon. Those were just some of the array of topics we covered.

Team Toyota Draft Spotlight: Jack Hextall

Red pennant banner with the word TEAM and a Toyota logo in a white square at the right.

Let’s start with the first question Flyers fans ask when USHL forward Jack Hextall’s name comes up in 2026 NHL Draft conversations. Yes, he is related to Flyers Hall of Fame goaltender and former general manager Ron Hextall. Hailing from Rolling Meadowns, Illinois, the 6-foot-1, 188-pound center is distant cousins with Ron Hextall.

However, that fact is irrelevant. It’s no more meaningful that the fact the Flyers already have an abundance of centers named Jack in the system (Nesbitt, Berglung and wing/center prospect Murtagh). Likewise, it makes no difference that Hextall played for a team called the Phantoms (Youngstown) this season. Finally, it’s a non-factor that Hextall is headed to Michigan State next season. That’s where Shane Vansaghi plays and Porter Martone played in 2025-26.

Hextall, a right-handed shooter, is a 200-foot center who has only scratched the surface of his potential with the puck on his stick. He posted 58 points (20g, 28a) in 59 points this season. At this point, Hextall is more of a playmaker than a goal-scorer but he has top-six to middle-six upside in a relatively shallow Draft pool for centers. He’s a smart and highly competitive player.

At the 2025 Hlinka tourney, Hextall posted seven points (two goals, five assists) in five games for gold medalist Team USA. Centering a line with Blake Zielinski and Noah Davidson, Hextall enjoyed all situations usage. Among national scouting pundits, Craig Button has Hextall slotted right in the Flyers’ range. The Flyers pick 21st in the first round. Button has him 24th in his rankings. The Hockey News has him 20th.

Hextall is attending the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo this week.

Five-time NHL All-Star and Flyers Hall of Fame inductee Brian Propp introduced his own line of top-quality hand-crafted Dominican cigars . The Guffaw Cigar collection is highly rated for its balanced boldness, sophistication and premium-aged tobacco. Brian himself is a longtime cigar aficionado. He wanted his signature line to reflect the qualities he values in a cigar.
