Flyers Phantoms Bump

Next season marks the start of a shortened exhibition schedule — and longer regular season schedule — for the Philadelphia Flyers and the rest of the National Hockey. On Monday, the Flyers announced their four-game preseason schedule ahead of the 84- game regular season slate.

Offseason trade target: Dylan Cozens

Sunday’s blockbuster trade that sent Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers sent shock waves across the entire NHL. Naturally, this had led to speculation about who else may be available from Ottawa this summer.

My gut feeling: the Tkachuk trade actually made it less likely that Ottawa will move either Dylan Cozens or Shane Pinto this offseason.

Earlier today, Senators general manager Steve Staois flatly stated that he had no intention to go into rebuilding mode. There’s no fire sale. The Tkachuk situation was about maximizing the return for a player that wanted out and did not intend to stay past his current contract.

Moreover, the Senators intend to use their huge open cap space to extend current core players. Likewise, the first-round picks added in the Tkachuk trade are available for selected NHL roster player trades.

Team Toyota Draft Spotlight: Wyatt Cullen

Red pennant banner with the word TEAM and a Toyota logo in a white square at the right.

In previous Team Toyota Draft Spotlight featurs, we have looked at USHL center Jack Hextall, BU center Tynan Lawrence, Swedish blueliner Malte Gustafsson, QMJHL center/winger Maddox Dagenais of the Quebec Remparts, incoming BU center Caleb Malhotra, Swedish defenseman: William Håkansson, the Ruck twins, London Knights defenseman Maksim Sokolovskii, and QMJHL defenseman Xavier Villaueuve.

Today, we’ll take a look at US National Team Development Program product Wyatt Cullen.

Cullen is one of the youngest players in the 2026 Draft Class. He was born on Sept. 8, 2008. Had he been born even a week later, he’d have had to wait until 2027 to be eligible for the NHL Draft.

Cullen hit a major growth spurt over the last two years and is now listed ar 6-foot-1. He will need to significantly fill out his frame but this is a highly competitive hockey player with fleet feet and offensive upside (especially as a playmaker). He further boosted his Draft stock for Team USA at the Under-18 Worlds, including nine points in just five games.

The player still gets outmuscled or overmatched defensively at times, but these concerns should alleviate as he gains experience and fills out. Come 2027-28, he will join the University of Minnesota hockey team.

Wyatt Cullen;s father Matt, great-grandfather Barry, uncle Mark, great-uncle John, and great-great-uncles Ray and Brian all played in the NHL. His brothers Brooks (Fargo Force, USHL) and Joey Cullen (2028 Draft eligible) are active players.

Flyers Daily: Monday with Meltzer

The most important week of the 2026 NHL offseason is upon us.

In this week’s Monday with Meltzer edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I preview the mayhem leading into and from Draft weekend. Some big trades have already gone down around the NHL; none bigger than the aforementioned Brady Tkachuk deal. The Flyers are heavily mentioned in many rumors circles.

Meanwhile, Jason and I try and make sense of all of it. Strap in for a crazy week and then some around the NHL.
