The Utah Mammoth have traded JJ Peterka to the Boston Bruins for the 23rd overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft. Utah also acquires a conditional first-round pick in the 2028 NHL draft.
JJ Peterka registered 25 goals and 22 assists for 47 points in 82 games for the Mammoth last season. The 24-year-old has four seasons left on his current contract with a $7.7 million cap hit.
With Peterka off the books, Utah GM Bill Armstrong now has $21 million in cap space for the offseason.
Utah Draft Selections
The Mammoth traded their own first-round pick (19th overall) and the 83rd overall pick to the Los Angeles Kings for the 17th overall pick. After trading up two spots, Utah used the 17th overall pick to select Ethan Belchetz.
Belchetz is an 18-year-old left-winger from Oakville, Ontario. The 6’5, 228-pound winger registered 34 goals and 25 assists for 59 points in 57 games last season for the Windsor Spitfires.
The Mammoth Trade for Sebastian Cossa
When it came time for Utah to use the 23rd overall pick acquired from the Peterka trade, GM Bill Armstrong traded the pick to the Detroit Red Wings for goaltender Sebastian Cossa.
Cossa posted a 26-8-4 record for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL last season. He finished the season with a 2.33 GAA and a .915 SV% with five shutouts. There is a chance that Cossa challenges for the backup goaltender role with the Mammoth.
Utah only has Karel Vejmelka under contract at the NHL level for goaltending. Cossa is a pending RFA, so the Mammoth will need to sign him first. He will challenge Michael Hrabal for the backup role, but could start the 2026-27 season with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL.
Unless Utah makes more trades, the Mammoth will make their next draft selection in the third round with the 83rd overall pick. At the end of Day 1 of the NHL draft, the Mammoth have six draft picks in rounds two through seven.
