The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are set for a rookie showdown tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Both lineups will feature a number of storylines as this game will provide a rare opportunity to impress in front of an a crowd in an NHL environment.
Instead of trying to drink from a firehose in terms of prospect stories, here are seven forwards to follow tonight:#
1. Matvei Gridin
With all of the makings of a breakout season in 2026-27, tonight will very likely be your last opportunity to watch Matvei Gridin play against up-and-comers.
The lightning-fast release, the patience in his playmaking drawing reference to NHL veterans—even Gridin’s remarkable stability when playing against seasoned pros.
2. Andrew Basha
Registering only a goal and four assists in his 27-game stint with the Calgary Wranglers, the Glen Lake product returned to the WHL Medicine Hat Tigers and posted a whopping 18 goals and 32 assists for 50 points in 32 games last season.
An injury in his draft year saw Basha fall to #41 overall in 2024. Despite playing through, his skating and pace have both been noted as areas needing work. That comes with the territory with lower body injuries.
Flash forward to today. An update on Andrew Basha’s progression is going to be fascinating.
3. Chase Harrington
Every championship team has a character or two. Chase Harrington is certainly that.
While his agitating style on Spokane in the WHL is certainly the common narrative, the six-foot-one winger plays a solid power game and has an underratedly deceptive shot.
4. Joe Iginla
Jarome’s youngest certainly drew the ire of a select few Flames fans when he was selected at the top of the third round last July.
Hard to find too many complaints since the start of camp.
Deemed “a bit underdeveloped” by many including Flames general manager Craig Conroy, Joe has much to prove. It wouldn’t hurt his reputation if he found the back of the net against the Oilers tonight.
5. Connor Clattenburg
Speaking of Oilers, we had to include one.
Clattenburg is a rising star in a dying role: NHL enforcer.
As a 20-year-old, the six-foot-two winger took on all comers in the AHL last season and finished the year with a total of ten fighting majors.
He also has a history with the Flames. Connor has dropped the gloves with Nick Cicek, Parker Bell and tonight’s Flames sheriff, Maceo Phillips—he handed won all three bouts.
Has the six-foot-six Phillips been hitting the weights enough to handle Clattenburg this time around?
