I know this is preseason. But I was hoping that the Vancouver Canucks would be more assertive in Thursday’s match. They were 9-27-5 at home last year. There was very little to watch at home. I was hoping that the Canucks would jump on this inexperienced Oilers team. The Canucks had a combined 6,789 games compared to an Oilers lineup that had a total of 912 games. The Canucks went down 2-0 and couldn’t recover. I’m not expecting a dominant home record. But I am hoping for a better home effort.
Chytil gets hurt.
I let out a loud arrrggghhhh when Filip Chytil collided with referee Riley Brace and had to leave the game. My heart breaks for a guy who has battled injuries. Fortunately, Brace was ok. Canucks Head Coach Manny Malhotra said they are looking at Chytil’s shoulder.
You can argue where Linus Karlsson should be in the lineup. Bit you can’t argue with his work effort. He scored a goal and was consistent all night. His play helped Elias Pettersson and Jake Debrusk, who played better as the game went on. Karlsson had two shots on goal and was on the ice for four scoring chances, including one high danger chance.
Luke Schenn was a physical presence in the second period. He laid two hard hits that got the Canciks crowd cheering. Jamie Oleksiak was solid as well. He stepped up when Connor Clatenburh was going after Karlsson.
Remember the phrase “The players will dictate where they play” from Manny Malhotra? Btaden Cootes is taking this to heart. He is not making lineup decisions easy. Cootes played 8:19, drew a penalty, and was 2-3 on the face-off dot
Another similar theme from last year was the Canucks struggle to generate any real offence when they were trailing. The Canucks struggled to sustain any pressure in the Oilers’ zone. There was one late chance for Elias Pettersson, but Zeev Buium had a pass that skipped over his stick. That was an example of the lack of sharpness Malhotra mentioned.
