Continuing where they left off Thursday, the Ottawa Senators took a bite out of the Sharks Saturday, trouncing San Jose 5-1.

While the opening period ended tied at one, the Senators owned this game for the most part from start to finish. Ottawa took full advantage from the outset off momentum of their four-goal comeback in Los Angeles.

The Senators registered the first nine shot attempts and never let up, almost doubling the Sharks in total through 60 minutes (80-41).

Senators Halloween Treats

An October for the ages

The Senators close the door in their busiest month of October in franchise history. Ottawa played 15 games in 29 days, an exhausting month which included three sets of back-to-back games, and will complete a fourth set Sunday in Anaheim. However, Sunday starts a fresh month.

The team posted a decent 9-5-1 record, considering the condensed schedule and a glut of injuries to key players. Defensemen Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot, Artem Zub all missed time, in addition to goalie Linus Ullmark, forwards William Eklund, Warren Foegele, Andre Burakovsky who are all currently sidelined.

The Senators nine wins in October tied a franchise high set in 2007-08 when the club went 9-1-0.

When you’re hot

On occasion goals have been tough to come by for Ottawa this season. The team entered Saturday’s matchup ranked 19th league-wide averaging 3.0 goals per game. Their power play ranked a paltry 29th (13.6%).

However, bouyed by several great performances, the Senators tallied five goals in each of their past two outings.

Since allowing four goals Thursday’s middle frame versus the Kings, Ottawa has outscored the opposition 9-2.

Tim Stützle and Drake Batherson continued their mastery in San Jose.

Stützle notched one goal, one assist, giving him four goals, six helpers in his past seven games. The 24-year-old sits seventh in NHL scoring with 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists). Twenty-one points is also a franchise-best for the month of October.

His nine markers equals Batherson’s great start to the 2026-27 campaign, also a Senators franchise high for the opening month of the season.

Batherson is truly on a heater, producing six goals, six assists over a seven-game points streak.

While Dylan Cozens snake-bitten days are in the rearview mirror.

Cozens who failed to tally a goal in his first 11 games, all of a sudden has four in his past four to go along with three assists.

Injuries necessitate changes

With Foegele, Burakovsky deemed out for three weeks to a month with injuries, plus forward Hayden Hodgson receiving a two-game ban for his hit to the head of Kings Brandt Clarke, the team recalled Xavier Bourgault and Philip Tomasino from Belleville.

Head coach Travis Green did his best to keep his third period lines from LA together with minor tweaks.

Cozens made the shift to right wing from centre during that third period flurry alongside Stützle. Tomasino slotted on the left of Shane Pinto/Batherson. Ridly Greig centred the dependable third line, added a shorthanded marker on this night.

Tomasino shines

Recalled Friday evening, Belleville’s leading point-getter (11 points in 10 games) fit in seamlessly on the Senators second forward unit. Signed to a one-year, two-way contract July 1, Tomasino assisted on Batherson’s goal, had a scoring good scoring chance himself in the first period, finished with two shots on goal in 12:10 of ice-time.

A veteran of 219 NHL games, selected 24th overall by Nashville in the 2019 Entry Draft, Tomasino said he’s not taking anything for granted.

“Just take it day by day. Today was a good first step. And enjoy it today, and then look towards tomorrow when the new day starts. So for me, I think I just take it one game at a time. And again, that’s been my mindset kind of all year. And nothing’s going to change now.”

Ersson steady

Samuel Ersson followed up his solid relief effort versus the Kings where stopped 20 of 22 shots in 32:31, by saving 22 of 23 Sharks shots Saturday. The goaltender earned his first win as a Senator.

The team needs Ersson to provide steady netminding, especially in lieu of Ullmark’s short-term injury. The former Flyer may have turned a corner after a series of subpar performances.

The Senators continue their five-game road swing Sunday in Anaheim prior to winding it up Wednesday closer to home in Buffalo.
